Missing Module (Error Message)

Just used ACID to ID and load Firmware (100b) on a new (used) A640. When I boot up I get a "missing module" error message and can't access any of the programs.

Checked the files in the folder -- the CHDK scripts are there.

What am I doing wrong? Can someone advise me on how to fix this?

You have not installed all the necessary files -  including not having the ones in the chdk/modules folder.

I'd suggest you use STICK -  the big brother of ACID that does the complete CHDK install for your.

Partitioned the SD card with Mac's Disk Utility and started over again using STICK, this time on a 16GB card.
STICK loaded the following files:

changelog.txt
DISKBOOT.BIN
PS.FIR
readme.txt
vers. req

I copied the CHDK folders and files from the card I use for my A630 and pasted them in the 16GB card in a CHDK folder.

Locked the card, put it in the A640, and powered up. The ALT menu doesn't load, and I get a "Card locked!" message.

Where did I go wrong? ( have a feeling copying the files wasn't kosher, that I should download them????).

A 16Gb card for an A640 will need two partitions, but don't do the formatting yourself, it's very easy to get it wrong.
I suggest you:

1. put the card in the camera and use the Canon menu to reformat the card as a single partition. That way you will be starting from a point that STICK can deal with properly.
2. put the card in you Mac and use STICK to do all the work. It will figure out that the card needs formatting and do it for you. It will also make the card bootable and copy the various files to the right partitions.

I wasn't going to comment here, as zeno has posted everything you need to do.  But I just can't resist saying that where you went wrong was pretty much everything you did.   What you did was perfectly logical and a good attempt.  It was just all wrong.

So many people used to get totally hung up in these sort of situations and I suspect just give up on using CHDK.  With the availability of STICK,  we all owe zeno (aka Dave Mitchell) at least a big thank you.  There is a paypal donate link on his site that he never mentions should someone feel inclined for a small extra thank you.

Thanks for your patience, guys.

I started over again, and got the same result "Card locked!".

I guess the red flag is the "not bootable" message at step 4.

STICK seems to do everything else, except make it bootable.

Do I make the card bootable as a separate step? Before or after STICK?

I looked up how to make an SD card bootable and found several YouTube videos. Looks kinda hairy, but if that's where I gotta go, I'll try it. May take some time.

STICK should be able to make the card bootable.  And if it can't,  I tend to suspect nothing else will.

But then I"m not a Mac user (or a user of any other product from that company!). 

STICK produces a log file as it goes along called  sticklog.txt.   It should be in the same folder as the STICK program itself.

Can you find that and post it here?

Also,  you might want to take a look at this :  http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=12306.msg121436#msg121436  Permission errors are notorious for causing problems installing CHDK on Macs.

Just a thought - if you are using a 'recent' version of OSX (Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite etc) you must use the stickML.command script to run STICK. If you don't, STICK will not have permission to write to the boot sector of the card (Apple introduced new rules for this sort of thing with Mountain Lion, just as Microsoft did with Windows 7 and 8 ).

You will be asked for your admin/logon password to give STICK permission (see the STICK webpage for more into).

If you used stickML.command and still have the problem, email the sticklog.txt file to me (daveATzenoshrdlu.com).

The permission problems that WaterWingz refers to do not occur if you use STICK (or ACID) to download and unzip the files.

Thank you, gentlemen! It's up and running. STICK.ML made the difference. Now to play with intervalometer and MD.  :D
