Memory Lock

Hey Folks,

I recently picked up a mint condition Canon S2is. I have successfully installed Cardtricks on a 128meg and 512 meg card. My problem is, I cannot get it to work on a 4 gig SanDisk card, I get a memory lock error, no matter what position the lock is in. I have successfully used the card on my wife's Canon Elph so, I doubt it is the card. Is there a problem using it on a canon S2 or am I doing something wrong ? Firmware for the S2 is rev "G". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Roger

My guess: your 4GB card is SDHC, not SD. The S2IS (AFAIK) doesn't support SDHC cards due to its age.
You're likely stuck with cards of 2GB or less, unless you can find some 4GB cards that are not SDHC (4GB SD cards are very rare and very likely no longer produced).
BTW, are you sure about the error message? You should IMHO get "Memory card error" for incompatible cards.

The S2is is so old that this might be one for the few cases where using Cardtricks is still okay.

What happens when you try to use the card without CHDK installed?   I'm guess that the S2is is so old that new SD card formats - and possibly card sizes that were impossibly large in 2005 - won't work with it.  Nothing to do with CHDK.

Hey Folks,

Thanks for the response, srsa_4c, you are correct, I was using an SDHC card. I picked up a 2 gig SD card and cardtricks loaded correctly. waterwingz, I got a card lock when loading without CHDK installed. I will use the 4 gig for my DSLR purchase, later this year. I had picked up the S2 on ebay as it was in mint condition and included an "as new" package, I only paid $45.00 for it as I was the top bidder. This is just a stop gap camera which, takes very good pics, will take it on vacation next month. Thanks again for the replies, it's really appreciated.

Having had to write-off two $400 "super zoom" cameras so far this year (SX50 & Oympus SP-100ee) where the warrantee was expired and/or the camera was obviously dropped,  I can see the advantage of a $45 shooter for vacation pix.
