I was thinking much the same thing. Although I was also thinking that the AF lamp is a whole lot bigger and a whole lot brighter so likely easier to interface to.

I’m reading this with much interest.
I’m thinking about to build a slider for time laps.
Controlling the slider with AF assist lamp or LED might be a good option.

I don't quite understand this.

Sorry for the confusion. I was testing with an ELPH 115. It only has one LED on the back and I cannot find any Auto Focus Assist settings in the Canon menus.

I don't think the logs are an option at all. When the autopilot send the signal to take a picture is useless information. I don't see any way to tie the camera logs back to the autopilot signal as a starting point.

Any other ideas if the LED is too problematic? I'm still thinking using the shutter sound from the speaker. Is it possible to turn off all other sounds? The ELPH 115 firmware has a volume setting that allows you to control:
Start up volume
Operation volume
Selftimer volume
Shutter volume

However, even when I disable all volumes except Shutter Volume it plays a beep as it focuses before the shutter sound.

I don't quite understand this.
Here are the steps :
  • Script decides that it is time to shoot.
  • Script turns on the LED
  • LED turns on
  • Camera shoots
  • LED is still on
  • Normal camera shooting process tries to turn on LED
  • LED is still on
  • Normal camera shooting process turns off the LED
  • LED is turns off

If both camera and autopilot are running an accurate clock,  you only have to figure out the offset between the two once.  Maybe a little trial and error?  After that you should have a pretty good time sync between the two.

There is no known way to turn off sounds with CHDK.  I also tend to suspect the code to make a sound would not be suitable for precise synchronization of the actual shooting time.

Ah! I had the Auto Focus Lamp covered in velcro. I was looking at the LED on the back of the camera. Your change appears to be working perfectly!!  One solid flash per picture.

May be worth noting that camera clocks are probably accurate enough on ~day timescales, but are likely to drift significantly over weeks or months. So you'd want to get the offset before each flight.

For sub-second accuracy, you would have to do it per camera boot anyway, since the tick value at which clock seconds roll over would be different each boot.

The most recent kap_uav.lua scripts sync the clock roll-over and tick counter so this should not really be a concern.
