STICK can't find my SD card on laptop

I tried installing CHDK and got to the point where STICK looks for the SD card.  It said it couldn't find any cards.  Windows explorer could see the card with no problem.  I tried the same procedure on my son's desktop computer and everything worked fine.  Both computers are running Windows 8.1.  Any ideas why STICK can't see the SD card on my laptop?  Thanks!

It's hard to know what is different between the two machines based on what you posted.   Different O/S setups or versions (Win8 comes in several flavors)? Different sequence that you did things in? Funky non-standard SD card hardware on your laptop?

STICK works fine on both of my laptops so it's not a generic problem with laptops.

Note that STICK usually needs to run with Admin privileges on Win7& Win8.    Did you click on  STICKX.CMD  rather than STICK.BAT ?

As you only ever need to setup a card once for the camera is will be used with,  the most immediate suggestion is to just use your son's machine  :P

Yes I did try running stickx, but that did the same thing.
Using my son's computer to get it going worked, but I also wanted to run WASP so I could look at my partitions and play with the scripts.  It won't run either.  I guess I will just have to change partitions on the camera before I take the card out and then change it back when I put the card back in the camera.
Thanks for the help!

Can you attach the log file (sticklog.txt in the directory where you installed STICK)?

There is a trick to that one.  You need to have CHDK installed on both partitions (or at least the ps.fi2 file in the root directory of each partition.)

When you have the larger partition swapped so that you can see it in your PC, you will not be able autoboot from it when you return it to your camera.  So you need to load CHDK via the "firmware update" method and then use the partition swap feature in the CHDK menus to swap the partitions back.

Here is the sticklog.txt file.
I have a canon sx20is camera and can't run the firmware update method, so I guess I am stuck using my son's computer.  He is going to love bugging me about that!  ::)
Thanks for the help!

STICK checks every drive letter and does not see the card.   Strange.   I'll ping Dave Mitchell - STICK's creator.  Maybe he will have an idea.

Or use a 4G card and a single partition?  Or just format your larger card with the first partition as 4G and FAT16 and boot from that.?  How often do you actually fill a card with more than 4G worth of images without transferring them to your PC for safe keeping?

Thanks for the help and the suggestions!  I might just use a 4G card and have one partition, that sounds like it would be the easiest.

I'm away from home and my main computer, so I don't have access to by email archive but you are not the first to hit this problem, though it is a rare occurence. I've never been able to track down what causes it - like WW it's never happened on any of my Windows environments/machines.

STICK uses standard Windows API calls to look for cards so the problem should not occur. But it may be something to do with the way card readers are mapped to drive letters on some machines.

My apologies anyway!

No problem.  As a friend at my work says "it's a Windows feature." He does not like windows and is a huge Linux fan.
