USB remote problem with SX40 HS

After installing the correct firmware and building my mini B USB remote switch, I cannot get it to activate the shoot mode on the camera, any Idea's?

I have looked through many posts to make sure my CHDK settings on the camera are correct and pressed ALT afterwards, to revert back to Cannon shooting mode.

My switch set up is a mini B cable, basic push switch and a 3 x AAA battery holder (registering 4.8 volts on my volt meter)

Oh, forgot to say, I am a NOOB to this, so please forgive me if I have missed a previous post on this camera topic

What firmware version?  Please post either the full zip file name that was downloaded or go to the Miscellaneous menu, select Show Build Info and tell us what it says for CHDK Ver: and Revision.

Please list exactly what you have set for each entry in the CHDK Settings -> Remote Parameters menu.  Posting a screen shot taken with another camera is an easy way to do that if you don't want to do a lot of typing.  (Using chdkptp to take a screen shot is an even better way - but probably too complicated for you at this point).l

That all sounds correct.   But assuming your CHDK settings are correct, the most likely issue here is a wiring error.  Can you link to the wiring diagram you used?

Also, did you also take a look at this :   CHDK Wiki : USB Remote

Edit :  one simple way to determine if your problem is wiring or software related is to use the standard USB cable that is used to connect your camera to your computer.  If you have the remote enabled and correctly configured,  then when you connect the cable between your PC and camera,  the camera will focus as the cable is connected and shoot when it's disconnected.

Hi

Thank you for your swift reply, I have done the USB cable into the PC trick and it worked as you described, so it must be wiring issue, I will find the wiring diagram that I have used to make the remote switch and post it for you to look at.
By the way I have used the red & black cables in the mini B USB cabling for positive/negative terminals, I take it that this would be correct?

That's the normal convention.  But nothing says that the Chinese factory that mass produces these sort of cable did not use a different color scheme the day they made your cable.  If you have a volt meter (even a $8 cheap one from eBay) it's a good idea to test voltage at the actual pins.

Hi once again,

Thank you for your help, I found out the problem, it was indeed a wiring issue, this has now been rectified and my remote switch is working fine,

Pooley.
