The thing to realize here is that typically 3V is not enough to trigger the 5V input level detect on most Canon cameras.  But on some I believe it will.   So the question becomes one of threshold tolerances.  If the voltage from two new AA cells is giving you enough voltage that the camera thinks there is power being applied to the USB connector +5V pin then try a set of older rechargable NiCad batteries.   You won't get much more than 1.2 volts from  each of them and that should be enough so that CHDK thinks the remote is "off".

OK, I put in one completely spent NiMH and one charged one. I now get 1.26V on each switch setting. Even then, plugging in the USB cable triggers the camera.

BTW is it normal that the remote function only works when the camera is NOT in CHDK mode?

Amazingly I was able to open the case without breaking it by gently pulling both halves apart. It has a nice clean little SMD board. Even the switch is mounted to the board so I can't alter the wiring. The two DATA lines are tied together but I don't think this affects anything other than cameras with built-in chargers. There were complaints about this on Amazon.

So when you put the switch in the 'on' position,  there is not enough voltage there to activate the boost regulator and all you are getting is the leakage voltage again?

That seems very strange - most of the reports I have seen indicate needing to be quite a bit above 3V to trigger the camera via CHDK USB remote operation.

Yes.  The whole purpose of the USB remote is to let you shoot without having to physically touch the shutter button. Sort of like a cable release on the old film cameras.  That the "built-in" functionality is only active when using the camera normally ( i.e. not in CHDK mode).   However, when you are running  a script (and thus in CHDK mode) the script can interact with the remote to control script action.

It appears that way.

Great. I do have more of the same camera. I could try other ones.

I would like to be able start a script remotely.

I have a bench power supply and four or five different models of CHDK enabled Powershots that I can quickly try when I get a spare moment.

That's one of the options in the  CHDK Settings  -> Remote Parameters  menu.

That would be great. I just tried 2 more of the same model with the same results.

Oh, 'Enable script start'. Does this mean using remote trigger from normal mode would start a script?
