because I am not running Windows and can therefore not use the STICK utility.
STICK runs on Windows, Linux and OSX. But, it needs a .zip file to install an "unsupported build". You can get one by running make firzipsubcomplete .
You can also use "Linux Method #2b" from that wikia page and copy the files manually.

There are "alpha" builds in the autobuild http://mighty-hoernsche.de/

You can check the porting thread to get an idea of what is known to work or incomplete http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=11164

Edit: oops, mixed up ixus and sx. There are no builds for the ixus 170

Attached is an updated, but still a work-in-progress, source code for the IXUS 170.
However I don't have this camera, so currently, I don't plan on completing this port.

Also see here http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=12385.msg126220#msg126220

Okay - so does your code build?  Does it boot and run?  Do you have any list of what works and what doesn't work?

I see these cameras are selling for $59 US refurbished on Canon's store. I am very interested in buying this camera and running CHDK on it. Does anyone have an update. Thanks.

Initial code exist on the forum, probably there should be no major problems.
Tell us if you buy the camera.

I just bought another ELPH camera instead, the ELPH350HS. It is similar to the 170IS but a comparison video on Youtube showed that it didn't have the 170IS's problems with lens flare when a strong light source is in front of the camera. I encountered that same problem with the 410IS, so perhaps the HS system makes the difference. The ELPH cameras are very similar otherwise, except for manual focus and a few more shooting modes. The ELPH350HS doesn't have a port yet, so I will see what I can do to help out when it arrives. Thanks!
