I have some lost the thread. What is now the current trunk? The delay or PAUSE_FOR_FILE_COUNTER?
This depends on the camera.
For G1x, Phil moved the raw capture to a different task, which apparently doesn't need any pause and doesn't have any performance impact (

This approach involves a lot of platform specific code, so can only be implemented and tested on one modal at a time.
Phil also proposed an alternate way of handling the pause in
http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=12500.0 but it has some issues with remote capture and folder change that don't have obvious, simple solutions, so it was never added to the trunk.
None of the other cameras have been changed.
