G11 cdhk not loading- bootbale SD card method

Hello,
I'm using a canon g11 firmware 1.00L camera release Jan  2010. I have downloaded the following zip file g11-100l-1.3.0-4272-full an extracted the files to the SD card. The SD card  had been low level formatted and is showing as 32 fat.
However once I turn on  (using playback only) the firmware update option does not appear in the menu so I cannot progress- what am I missing here?
Any help greatly appreciated as my brain  is now near melting point...

The firmware update method of loading CHDK is disabled on the G11 - the comments in the code state it does not work.

I can create a build with this enabled if you would like to test it.

Hi Phil,
thanks for responding so quickly. I'm definitely missing something here- I saw the text about the firmware update not being available here: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/G11 so went to method 2 of the bootable sd card page as an alternative, but it sounds like that just a  firmware update method?

I can try using the stick utility which I haven't tried yet, but if a build is possible and an optimum solution  that would be great. Naturally I don't want to put you to any trouble if it is a long/complex process!

thanks!
Brian

Attached is a build with the firmware update boot file.
It probably won't work; but can't hurt to try.

Stick is the best option to create an autoboot SD card; but the G11 can only autoboot from a FAT16 partition which must be < 4GB in size.

While STICK will create the necessary two partitions if you are using a card bigger than 4GB, if you are a Windows user you will find bigger cards a real pain. Windows only lets you see the 'active partition - and to run CHDK and take pictures the small FAT16 partition has to be the active one, while to transfer pictures from card to computer using a card reader requires the FAT32 partition to be the active one. As a result you have to switch partitions each time (see my WASP app).

If you use a Mac (OSX) or Linux the problem goes away - both let you see both partitions at the same time

Philmoz and zenon, many thanks for your help.

Philmoz, I'll give the build a go and report back thank you for taking the time to do that, appreciate it!

Failing that i'll see if I can transfer to a mac and go via the stick method to avoid the partition visibility issues that zeno mentions.

many thanks again.

You don't need to use a Mac to setup your SD card to work with CHDK.   STICK will correctly format your card with the two necessary partitions for a G11 on any Windows PC.  A Mac makes it easier to see both partitions afterwards but there are several ways to also do that on a Windows machine.
