@philmoz

Just got my G5X and it's 101e.
@srsa_4c suggested I share the dumps, so here they are: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qewikkq0dd6z1x7/AAATpwVLn-7vwhYjtwo6C-SFa?dl=0
@srsa_4c also suggested that 101d should/may be OK. I would welcome hearing that this is the case, so I can start using CHDK.
Cheers
Garry

Yes, looks like 1.01d is compatible with 1.01e.

Test build attached.

@philmoz

Thanks for the confirmation and quick turn around. I'll start 'playing' around tomorrow.

I must say, I think this cam is a cracker.

BTW why does Canon change firmware like this, eg what is the difference between e and d, say.

Cheers

Garry

Have started 'playing' with the G5X, but I've faltered a little and can't see why.

Using the boot SD card method, I did the firmware update in cam, ran the make card bootable, shut down cam, write protected the card, but no CHDK on restart.

I also tried EOSCard to make it bootable. EOSCard says success.

Is there something else on the G5X that I should do, to get CHDK up and running ?

Update. Ok I guess where we are is that I have to do the firmware update every time, ie no bootflag working yet.

Auto booting works; but the CHDK option to make the card bootable doesn't (probably need to fix or remove this on the G5X).
I think the Stick app can make a bootable card; but I have not used it.
Also check the card format, large cards are formatted as exFAT by the camera. You probably need FAT or FAT32.

STICK no good, I think as can't complete step 1, ie download CHDK.

Retried EOSCard and it says successfully updated.
But still doesn't work.

Very good news is that my DOFIC script runs out of the box  :) :) :) :) :)

I've checked in the 1.01e version to SVN so it should be in the auto build server soon.
That should allow you to try Stick.

Great.

I've also tried using STICK in the test mode, ie putting the zip you sent me in the STICK folder.

That moves the process on, but now I get (on two separate SD card) "bootability unknown" and STICK stops.

I'll carry on investigating  ;)

OK, got there and it was most probably my ignorance.

I had assumed that the BOOTDISK at 0x01E meant writing the BOOTDISK at 0000001E0.

I then saw EOSCard was writing BOOTDISK at 0004001E0

Accepted this and moved on and, of course, G5X now booting into CHDK as expected.

Bottom line: I need to educate myself on the hex world I guess  ;)

Thanks for all your support out there.

Cheers

First Impressions

An impressive camera.

CHDK feels solid, apart from the flickering that was to be expected.

Love CHDK in the EVF.

My DOFIC script runs out of the box  :)

Only strangeness is that, if I use the EVF, on return to LV I lose both Canon and CHDK overlays. The only way that I seem to get the overlays back is to fully close the LV screen, but this doesn’t seem to work every time.

I’ll carry on testing and reporting, but note, I don’t do ‘video stuff’  ;)

A day of testing on the G5X and the only major issue, other than flicker of course, is that the LV gets ‘switched off’ if you use the EVF, ie both Canon and CHDK overlays disappear.

I confirmed it must be related to CHDK, as unlocking the SD card results in EVF and LV  seamlessly switching between each other.

I’ll carry on reporting.
