 I have NOT given up on using my Canon Powershot as a webcam, it’s working great on Zoom calls under battery with a Magewell video capture card and most overlays turned off.  But the battery drains quickly which prompted me to buy an knockoff ACK-DC110 AC Adapter Kit (OEM no longer available).  It turns out the camera’s power saver lcd off isn’t overridden when using this.  But there are software hacks that supposedly can do it. https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=14065.0  My head hurts just trying to understand this stuff, how would I find someone who knows their stuff on this camera who I could pay to do it for me?  Any advice is appreciated!  I'm on a MacBook Pro.

Yes I have and I'm not sure it can be done on a MacBook or which file is the correct one or how to do it.  I'm hoping there is an expert in this forum who would walk me through it step by step for a fee AFTER verifying it can be done for a G5X (not Mark II)on a MacBook and with no negative reprecussions.  Are you that expert?

There is a working CHDK build for G5X (original like your camera, not Mark II), which includes the clean overlay and disable LCD off options. You can install it following the instructions on the wiki if your camera has a supported Canon firmware version https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/Prepare_your_SD_card

If your Canon firmware is not one of the supported versions, support can probably be added if you provide a firmware dump.

Users have reported successfully using the "Stick" utility to install from Mac.

A few things to clear up:
* When you read about this, some of the things you read were for a script used on cameras without CHDK support, as described in this thread or information from other people using the same method. Since your camera is supported by CHDK, none of that applies. (I don't think a version of that script was ever made for G5X, but I could be wrong)

* CHDK runs from the SD card on the camera. It doesn't care about Mac or Windows. But you do need to get the files on your SD card, and some special configuration is required to make CHDK load when the camera starts.

* There are a number of different ways to get CHDK correctly installed on an SD card. Some are Mac or Windows programs. The simplest, if it works for you, is probably the STICK application. It's a Java application which supports both Mac and Windows. See http://zenoshrdlu.com/stick/stick.html
If you follow the instructions there, it should download the correct CHDK files for you.
Note there are various caveats for different Mac OS versions.

If for some reason you aren't able to use STICK, other installation methods are described on https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/Prepare_your_SD_card

CHDK Steps

There are a number of different ways to get CHDK correctly installed on an SD card. Some are Mac or Windows programs. The simplest, if it works for you, is probably the STICK application. It's a Java application which supports both Mac and Windows. See http://zenoshrdlu.com/stick/stick.html
NEED TO REMOVE JAVA FROM MAC TO INSTALL OLDER VERSION - See Failure notes below

How can I get the original firmware version number of my camera?

For Windows, Mac and Linux users there is a tool available to identify the firmware version of your camera and automatically download the right build - ACID.
ACID NEEDS JAVA REMOVAL AND INSTALL - DOESN’T WORK

Windows users can also extract the firmware version number with wim's CameraVersion tool  I AM MAC/NOT WINDOWS

Most cameras released after 2013 do not support the ver.req / vers.req trick described below. Use the ACID tools linked above to get the firmware version  G5X Launched October 13, 2015 so no Ver.req / ACID no go because of JAVA

Probably. Modern versions of CHDK refuse to run on incompatible Canon firmware, so trying should be low rows. If the version is incompatible, it will just blink an LED until you pull the battery.

So if I just download the Canon firmware, upgrade the camera to 1.1.0.0, use your 1.10A I should be ok?  I did download the 1.10A but cannot copy to the formatted SD card.

It's your choice, you can either use the build for your current firmware (101b) or update and use the 110a build.

You cannot copy the CHDK files with a USB or wifi connection to the camera, you must use a card reader.

The CHDK files are in zip archive. You must extract the files and copy them to the root folder of the SD card, preserving the directory structure from the zip.

There can be additional, Mac specific issues if you copy using normal file copy on a  Mac, see: https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#You_may_have_issues_with_permissions.

If you want CHDK to run automatically when the camera starts, there are additional requirements:

The card must be formatted FAT32. FAT32 is the default for cards 32GB and smaller. Larger cards default to exFAT.  The simplest way to do this is just to use a 32GB or smaller card for CHDK. Otherwise, you need to find out how to format FAT32 from your Mac.

You need to make the card "bootable" by writing a special, Canon specific flag to it. If you are unable to run utilities like stick, the simplest way to do this is to start the CHDK using the "firmware update" method (https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/%22firmware_update_method%22) once, and use CHDK to make the card bootable.

The write protect switch must be set on the card (the card will still be writable when CHDK is running).
