Is there any way short of switching off the camera to remove an edge overlay once loaded? I know that the overlay can be temporarily disabled, but what if I wanted to load one overlay image to start a series, and then switch to the free panorama mode? The old overlay still persists.

It looks like when you shoot, the previous overlay is replaced, which I think should allow you to do this. I may have misunderstood.
There doesn't seem to be any UI to just discard the current overlay. I'd say this is a bug.
The whole thing is pretty confusing.
