Chopped A810

Hi,
I have always thought that imy A810 would be a great astro camera if I could remove the stock lens. So I chopped it off with a hacksaw as shown in the foto. The camera still works in playback mode but when I enter capture mode it whirs for a few seconds, beeps 6 times and then displays "Lens error. Will shutdown automatically. Restart camera". I can still access the CHDK menu.
Is there any way to bypass the error message and put it in capture mode?

You're in for a bit of a challenge here - there is no really easy solution.

I previously posted several good links in this thread :  Disable Lens self test

There is also this short thread : Powershot A470 Lens Removal and Error bypass which links to this :

CHDK Wiki : Working with a broken camera

Happy reading and let us know what you decide to do?

Many thanks for taking the time to reply with so much information. Looks like there are a few options to explore and I will report back on my progress.

ps I wish I had asked the question before I got my saw out ::)

I think people have been more successful removing just the glass elements. Or pulling the whole lens mechanism to one side leaving everything connected. But nether of those options is easy either.

You might new able to obtain a cheap used A810 on eBay?

If I can get this camera to capture, I will get a second hand replacement. This time I will chop it more carefully and use it for astro prime focus work. If not, I will get a used SX and try it out on astro fuzzies.

I think I will have to add the A810 to my todo box. No success with any of the listed hacks.

Instead, I just bought a near mint SX-230 for £35 which I am getting to know. Nice surprise was the 32gb class10 card I found inside when I got it home  :)
