How well does this forum work for you?

Hello,

I heard about you guys a few years back when a friend of mine bought a S100.  I decided to visit and search this forum to read opinions and compatibility of different camera.  I found the site incredibly difficult to access.  Most people would not have had the determination I had, but when something annoys me, I push harder, a lot harder.

The problems I see I've listed below.  With these annoyances and hindrances, why does the community tolerate this?  Is it because they are free and ad supported?  I think there are better approaches.  I rent a LAMP server on Digital Ocean and it's cheaper than a static IP in my house (okay, it's $10 a month and a static IP is included).  Is there a lack of donors to support an ads free/hassle free version of the site?  Just saying.

I can't log in via Facebook.  Says my email address isn't valid.  As I have received mail from this address in order to create my Facebook account, I can assure it's format adheres to all RFCs that define a valid email address.

The captcha for the search is broken.  I fidgeted with this for several minutes, reported problems a number of times.  I finally gave up on the search too and decided to hit straight to the forum.  Asking is easier than searching in this case.

I though this was so bad, I decided to go after the hosting people.  Create-a-Forum.  They seem to exist as a Facebook page that is pretty heavily armored down.  My guess is that they've crossed a few people to heavily manage their social media presence.

Is all this worth it to you guys?  Look at other forums out there.  This one has the ambiance of a flea market and for what's provided here, I see so much potential here.  And I had to do that Captcha again just to post this.  I must still look like a bot...

Hi Tim,

Considering that English is not my native language, I'll have to ask you to rephrase this paragraph, because I don't get it.

As for the reported issues (other than the Facebook login , which I wasn't aware it was broken), I couldn't make the time to have a look at those, because I'm busy doing my actual job.

Either way, I would guess that there could be someone who would consider this post of yours as a very insightful and humble first post.

Cheers,
admin

edit:
I felt I should link the forum's first post here, just as a reminder:

Works for me. Not perfect, but it gets the job done. It also contains the last >8 years of collected CHDK knowledge.

I certainly appreciate acseven volunteering the time to keep it running.

Throwing some forum software on a LAMP VPS is easy and cheap, but someone still needs to administer it.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Works fine here with facebook login.

Not chuffed if the recent mention of google site search (post 2015) issue persists - though, without research, that seems as likely a google problem to me.

I'm leaving this topic open for the discussion brought up by timothylegg (i.e. the question in the title and related text), but regarding the actual issues please refer to this unified topic:

I'd also like to remember that I have no problem whatsoever with discussions about where and by whom this forum should be hosted and managed - it's not mine, it belongs to the community, I just happen to have created and maintained it ever since, but that doesn't mean I should do it for ever. For the time being it doesn't trouble me and when/if it does I will let you know.

Cheers
