Can U elaborate why STICK is less prone to errors than manually?
Because using STICK eliminates PEBKAC issues. It will download the right CHDK version for your camera, format the SD card properly, install CHDK correctly (in all the right folders on your SD card), and finally it will setup the card to autoboot every time the camera starts.

Clearly something is wrong with either your understanding of how CHDK works, with the way you have setup your SD card, or (much less likely) with your SD card or camera hardware.  We can figure out which and why - sorry if it takes a little time.

I was able to load/install/operate camera in chdk mode in no time following the chdk prep SD card instructions. I think something else happened when I used a USB3 reader (no names pls).
Again,  this seems unlikely.

2nd chdk but I had no clue and still don't as to why camera loads chdk but drops it when it is turned on.
Let's take this slowly. CHDK has to be loaded each time the camera is started as it runs in RAM and makes no permanent changes to the camera itself.  It "goes away" each time you turn the camera off.

There are two different methods that you can use to load CHDK.
  • You can go to the Canon "Firmware Update" method and use that to load CHDK.  Please note that it does not actually modify the firmware - CHDK tricks the Canon firmware and only loads itself temporarily into RAM.
  • If your SD card is correctly configured,  CHDK can load automatically each time the camera starts if the SD card lock switch is in the "Locked" position. But again, it "goes away" when the camera shuts down - not permanent changes have been made.

So to save RAW images,  CHDK must be loaded.  You can't load CHDK manually via the firmware update method,  enable RAW,  shutdown the camera,  and expect RAW to stll be enabled when you restart the camera.   RAW only works if CHDK is loaded each time the camera starts.

Does that help?

No diff between FAT/FAT32 re no raw folder or raw files.  There was no chdk splash screen when I turned camera "ON" although there was the usual splash screen when chdk was loaded (firmware update) and all the menus were avail in alt.
As I explained before, loading with "firm update" only runs CHDK once, it does not permanently enable CHDK on your camera.

If you do not see the CHDK splash screen, CHDK is not running at all, so no CHDK features will be available. If you switched to record mode after doing firm update, you will presumably be able to shoot raw until you power the camera off. If this is not the case, then you have some other problem.

If you want CHDK to start automatically, you need to make the card bootable. For your camera, this requires
1) Card formatted FAT16. IIRC, under windows, formatting a 4gb card FAT16 requires using the command line and specifying a 64k sector size.
2) Card lock set
3) Canon proprietary boot flag be set, for example using the CHDK "make card bootable" option or the Stick tool.

None of this should have anything to do with using USB3 or what you did with the OS on your PC.

edit:
Stick should handle #1 as well.

Not clear on when splash screen is seen? I see it each time I update firmware which is preferable method as wife also uses the 1200. I do not see the slash screen when camera is turned on after firmware update.

I could buy another SD card for the boot method but would I not have to swap partitions twice each time I wanted to load raw images to PC??

You can turn autoboot on or off just by moving the SD card lock switch.  So use the same card for both your use and your wife's.

You only need dual partitions if your card is larger than 4G.

Are you clear yet that you have to load CHDK each time?.  You are not actually updating the firmware!

Tried format in FAT (FAT16??) with no change -- still no raw folder or raw files.
It must specifically be FAT16. If you do a default format, it will end up FAT32.

Do you see a CHDK splash screen when the camera starts?

tks for the advice but no change. What to u mean "..splash screen when camera starts?" I only recall seeing the chdk splash screen immediately after firmware update is performed. All menus are avail and previous settings can be checked/modified at this time. I then turn camera on but do not see any changes on screen as I had when I originally tried it. I have raw images loaded on my PC from before the problem show up.

This is the expected behavior if your card is not made bootable. CHDK is only running immediately after firmware update. If you subsequently switch to record mode without turning the camera off you should be able to shoot raw as expected. If this is not the case, you have some other problem.

If you use card formatted FAT16, you only need one partition. This only works for cards up to 4GB, and as mentioned before, formatting a 4 GB card FAT16 requires special options. 2GB and less probably default to FAT16 if you format them in camera.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

No progress to tell......

Tried 3 ways to work around the problem - using 4GB sd card bootable method.
1 - Used Stick with a clean card. Formatted fat (fat16) using W10P (Windows 10 Pro).
2 - Used chdk sd card prep instructions method #2 bootable. Wiped/partitioned using EaseUS.
3 - Used chdk sd card prep instructions method #2 bootable. Used W10P DISKPART to make bootable card.

When I used STICK boot loaded chdk (screen logo OK) but camera would not turn on - only into play mode. Ways 2 & 3 required "firmware installation" but with same results - camera would not activate only into play mode automatically.

Camera turns on OK & captures images with unlocked card.

CHDK normally boots only into playback mode. It's a long story. After the camera starts, try toggling the record / playback switch on the back of the camera.  Or press the shutter button. Either should take you into shooting mode.

Many thanks to all -- pressing the shutter switch did it!!!

Now to see what else I can destroy.  :D  8)
