Good CHDK cameras

Hello,

I'm looking for a good compact camera (used) for CHDK. It will function as a backup/secondary or nerd project camera.

So far, my top picks are the
-S95
-SX220HS (or similar model)

The S95 is almost certainly my top choice, except it can't shoot 1080p video.

The SX220HS would be great due to its zoom and 1080p capability, but it doesn't have the control ring and some other high-end features. However, this is a secondary camera. My main camera has a superzoom and it, along with my phone, can shoot 1080p video.

So would you recommend the S95 as a good used camera for CHDK? AFAIK, it was a top-of-the-line point & shoot in 2010 and still solidly measures up today.

(Yes, I know the S100 and S110 can shoot 1080p, but they seem to be significantly more expensive on eBay.)

Personal bias here. If you want a video camera, buy a good video camera. If you want to take still photographs ("real photography") then choose a good still camera. If you want both in one unit at an discount price, well... good luck.

I have an S100 (and a few other Canon P&S cameras). It does not do anything for me that an S90 or S95 would not - especially once I load CHDK. But then I also have a G10 .. an underappreciated wonder from Canon's long line of cameras.

IMHO ...

A couple minor points
1) Cameras released in 2011 and later can boot from FAT32 formatted cards. Older cameras like the S95 require multi-partition for cards larger than 4GB, which is more complicated to set up and makes it very inconvenient to transfer using a card reader under windows. All else being equal, I would go for a 2011 or newer cam (DryOS 47 or later in http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/P-ID_(Table))
2) The SX230 port (and probably SX220, although this isn't completely confirmed) has some unresolved issues related to raw in continuous mode. All else being equal, I would avoid these cameras.

This is true. But easily solved if you stick to 4G SD cards - which are very inexpensive. Not complicated at all.

Like the S100 / S110. A few dollars more but perhaps worth the extra cost over the time you will own & use the camera. (Disclaimer: I own both versions of the Canon S100 - including the original Powershot Digital ELPH S100 )
