Since posting checked SD wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital  and found "Risks of reformatting[edit] Reformatting an SD card with a different file system, or even with the same one, may make the card slower, or shorten its lifespan.
...
Personally, I wouldn't worry about stuff like this unless you encounter a specific problem. It is true SD cards contain controller and firmware which can behave unpredictably if not used as the manufacturer expected, but this is totally undocumented and is likely to vary from card to card. Even different production batches of cards of same brand, capacity and model could use entirely different firmware, controllers or flash chips.

In the real world, people reformat cards and they continue to work fine. Chances are the designers worked to make it function correctly when formatted by typical devices like cameras or PCs. It is conceivable that things like partitioning, or formatting a card that came exFAT as FAT32 will cause some card to behave badly, but there's no way to know without careful testing of the particular cards.

If you want to minimize the chance of running into problems, your best bet is to stay as close as possible to "typical" users usage. So my advice is find some decent name brand 32 GB cards on sale on newegg or amazon or wherever you buy stuff like that, dedicate some of them to your CHDK camera and some to your Nikon don't worry about it.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

reyalp,

"I wouldn't worry about stuff like this unless you encounter a specific problem." Agree

Going to 64GB SD cards am seeing a problem with older equipment that does not support exFAT.  So seems best for present to either reformat all new cards to FAT32 from beginning or as you mention keep dedicated cards for specific equipment.

Question: A specific problem I have is recently purchased 4 identical 64GB mSD cards.  All work in Canon and Nikon cameras supporting exFAT.  3 work in my Samsung Note 3 and 1 will not mount and if try gives message "card damaged"  I took photos and can post if you want.

Am curious as to the difference between the good and damaged cards.  Wonder if there is any software that can do this?  Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks again for your help!

Ken

By accident I found Reason for exFAT 64GB Cards becoming damaged!  Never dreamed this could happen!

When I install  a Good mSD Card in my Nook Tablet it asks if should Format.  Even if cancel Format somehow the SD Card becomes Damaged.  I accidentally did this to a Good 64GB Card that before this worked in both the Note 3 and my PC. Now it does not work in either!

Googled and found  HOW TO - 64GB exFAT SDXC card ruined by Cyanogenmod - how to get data back
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/how-to-64gb-exfat-sdxc-card-ruined-t1797499?nocache=1

Now all I need to do is find software that can tell me what is damaged or find this info on the Internet so I can repair these cards.

Thanks again for your help!
