I give up

CHDK has me on the verge of tears.  I had an old version running happily on my A570 but have just tried to upgrade to a new, stable version.  I have had to give up in frustration.  Unfortunately I didn't back up the old one, so I will have to do without CHDK.

The chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Prepare_your_SD_card page is sheer chaos.  Everything is on there, all mixed up.  Much of it is clearly wrong.  Some information is outside the web site, eg. a link to forums.dpreview.com going to a thread which is almost ten years old.

All I want are the instructions for (a) an SD card larger than 4GB, and (b) how to install it in Linux.  But I have to wade through vast amounts of other stuff I don't want.  Why isn't that page split into several other pages, by operating system and SD card size?

I've spent two days trying to get it to work; enough is enough.  Maybe one day I will have the strength to try again but for now it is bye bye CHDK.

Did you try the Stick utility mentioned at the top of the page? This is generally considered the most user friendly approach.

Using > 4gb card on an old camera like a570 is unfortunately one of the more complicated cases. If you want to do it manually, you need to partition the card yourself. See the sections labeled "linux 2a" through "linux 4"

An alternative would be to just use 4gb cards when you want to use CHDK. They are cheap and much simpler to deal with.

The wiki is maintained (or not) by anyone who wants to edit it. Personally, I often find it difficult to know the right balance between trying to cover everything and trying to keep things simple for the most common cases.

Unfortunately, there are so many permutations of card, camera, and OS that there is no simple solutions.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

So are you posting here just because you like to complain?  Or would you actually like some help solving this problem?

If you want some help, a more detailed description of what you tried and what you observered will be necessary.

Or you could just use the STICK utility linked at the top of the page wikia page you referenced here.  Yes, it works under Linux and it knows how to create dual partition cards for cameras that require that.

We can built any old version you'd like.  But I suspect you will have the same problems installing an old version.

Thank you for your compliments.  I spent a lot of time pulling all that information together and getting it in one place.  Prior to that, there was only a hodge-podge of unrelated articles that were out of date and/or wrong.

AFAIK,  there are now no errors or things "clearly wrong" with the page. Several very experienced people have reviewed that page as well.  Please feel free to fix any errors you discover,  or post here if you are not sure that what you see is actually an error.

I'm sorry.  I'll immediately delete everything on that page that is not needed for your specific computer and camera.   Not.

It's a public wikia.  Feel free to create a new version or improve what is there if you want to spend the time.

Perhaps when you have calmed down we can be of some help. But you'll need to work with us - this rant serves nobody well.
