Dear Developers

I would be very grateful indeed for your help.

I am very much hoping that I will be able to take some amazing photos of the total solar eclipse in the USA this August similar to the sort of eclipse photos that Miloslav Druckmüller has taken which require shots at a wide variety of shutter speeds. I therefore need a camera which meets the following six criteria:

1. At least 20MP resolution

2. At least 500mm focal range (35mm equiv)

3. Must have manual focus

4. Not too bulky or heavy (easy to pack into cabin luggage)

5. Not too expensive (Under $1,000)

6. At least 9EV of total AEB range with many bracketing shots per single push of the button (This way, I would be able to take all of the photos I need for combining later with just one push of the button without much interruption of my actual viewing of the eclipse with my eyes.)

I have discovered that five models of the Canon PowerShot range meet the first five criteria but they all have rubbish AEB. This is why I am hoping that CHDK might be able to step in to the rescue. The five PowerShot models are as follows:

G3X
SX710
SX620
SX540
SX720

I think that the best of the above five models is the G3X because it has the biggest sensor.

I have found out that CHDK has not yet been ported to any of the above cameras. I would therefore be very grateful indeed if you could release a version of CHDK for at least one of them. I would however understand if this is not possible.

Are there any plans to port any of the above five cameras soon? If yes, do you have any idea when it will be ready?

I would do it myself but I haven't a clue how to do it.

There is never a plan or schedule for CHDK ports, see this FAQ

You might consider one of the existing ports, such as the SX60 or EOS M3, but you should be aware that both Digic 6 and interchangeable lens support are works in progress. Doing what you want using any CHDK port would also likely involve a significant learning curve.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Are you saying that if I were to use the CHDK port for the SX60 in, for example, a SX620 camera, it may actually work even though it is for a different camera?

I'll answer that.  There is no chance the port for one camera will work on a different model.  Reyalp is suggesting that you use a different camera model already supported by CHDK.

Unfortunately, the cameras I listed in my original post are the only ones which satisfy the first five criteria I mentioned.

It look as if I am going to have to concede defeat with this.

Or adjust your criteria... for example, the SX60 is only 16MP, but should otherwise meet all the criteria and be a better camera overall than low end models like the SX540 and SX620.

I can't see what harm I am doing just making a polite request. I don't believe in forcing anyone to do anything.
