Thank you, so my display is x = 640, y = 480 in the lower right corner?  So to make a line, the first two numbers are one x, y position, the second two are the other x, y position, and it draws a line betwee the two.  OK, if that's it, I will see if I can modify the existing ones.
I've attached a small spreadsheet that converts nine of the standard grids to G16 aspect ratio.  I left out the id.grd file as I can never figure out what it's supposed to be.  I've also created G16 versions of each grid file from the spreadsheet.  You might find that the normal DIGIC6 "flashing screen" stuff in shooting mode makes them not too useful but at least it's done.

Edit : deleted attachment - updated file attached to the next post.

Updated spreadsheet & GRD files.  The new version puts everything on two tabs - revised & original so you don't have to edit every tab if you want to try different aspect ratios.

If shipwrights disease really sets in,  I suppose that I could add a macro to export the various .GRD files automatically. Hmmmm ... probably not.

I also added the two missing GRD files from the previous post.  I even figured out what the photo_id.grd file is for!  If you rotate the camera 90 deg you can use it to allign pictures of people's heads with the requirements for passport photos.

Also, if you press the DISP button until you get an LCD display with a minimum of Canon OSD stuff, the grids are a lot more usable in shooting mode.

@reyalp : this is not really G16 specific?  Can you move the grid posts from this thread to Grids : issues and challenges?  TIA.

Yes, that's it.
The picture shows the required dimensions for standard biometric photographs (26mm x 32mm). This standard is valid for EU and US.

Any reason why the last Firmware for the camera is beta, the older ones still alpha?

Typically the use of alpha or beta status reflects the amount of testing that has been done and reported here. I own two 1.01c versions so that version got the most testing and thus Beta status.

But there is no official process to eventually promote alpha or beta status to fully released. Unless the person who did the port remembers to have it changed, ports tend to get stuck after work on them stops and bug reports cease.

@reyalp : please bump the G16 to ports to full release status for me? TIA.  The number of cameras now only available as 1.5 releases might also justify bumping that now as well?

What has to happen to get a CHDK working, I guess as an "autobuild?" I have a canon g16 101b but it seems I have to jump through hoops just to even test this on my camera. "firmware update method" apparently won't work. It seems i have to reformat a SD card and make it bootable but I don't have an extra card, which is why simply copying some files to an existing one via the "firmware update method" would have been so much simpler. I'm planning on going away in a few days and was looking forward to trying some milky way photography and overriding the settings on my camera to take longer exposures (and buying/shipping a sky tracker to enable longer shots at the same time) but I'm not even sure how to even get this on my camera to test if I can even do a longer exposure!

Yes.  :P    ... make it bootable is probably enough. (and set SD- switch to locked.)

Sorry - DIGIC6 cameras like your G16 have issues with the firmware update method of booting that we have not been able to solve completely.

There are a couple of simple utilities for automatically formatting and configuring a card to autoboot CHDK.  An extra SD card might be the cheapest camera thing you will be taking on your trip.  Why not just buy one and make your life easy?

FWIW, srsa_4c found a fix that works on at least some cameras, see https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=11316.msg136622#msg136622 and sx710 r5353 for example. This did not resolve all issues for me on g7x, but works on my other digic 6 cams

I second that. If you want to use CHDK at all, firmware update loading is really inconvenient.
