Here's a test build for firmware 100e. The alt button still defaults to playback, but you should be able to set it to shortcut or erase (AF frame select)

When they are assigned as the alt key, the original canon functions of these buttons should only be triggered if you hold them down for ~half a second or more.

Works great. 
I tried all of the available buttons and they all work.  Defaulted to <Shortcut>.

Hmm, I didn't expect this, but I guess it makes sense because aliased to print/shortcut before and that's what was in your config.

It would probably revert to playback if you reset your setting, but I was trying to leave it on playback so users wouldn't suddenly have the alt key changed when they update.

I belatedly checked this in, autobuild 4761 and later for both trunk and stable.

I don't really like changing users existing key assignments, especially in the stable branch, but I didn't see a better way to deal with it.
