SX210IS - long exposures not working

I set the long exposure override on my SX 210 IS, and I checked the [] box, and overrides were enabled. But the exposure was 15 seconds (the setting from the Canon software) rather than the 45 seconds, 1 minute, or 2 minutes that I tried. It only worked on 2 minutes once, with the aperture overridden to f/16, and basically froze trying to process the picture (it still showed up on the SD card.) It worked with 45 seconds on one occasion, but I don't recall the settings.

What could I have done wrong?

Make sure you switch off "Servo AF" in the canon menu. Other suspects are face detection and continuous AF. Also, use the P, Av, Tv, M modes if possible.

Note that if you do not have dark frame subtraction disabled, the camera will appear to process the image for an interval equal to the extended exposure time.  This can make it appear like the camera is frozen.
