What was posted in that thread was really only a proof of concept, not a really usable solution.
On some cameras (mostly the more expensive ones), the native firmware supports video out in REC mode. You can find this information in the Canon user manual. If the camera supports video out in rec mode, the manual will say so in the section on TV display. If not, it will only describe playback.
If you have a USB host available, you might be able to use CHDK PTP live view instead.
