So I went ahead and implemented binary version detection. I was able to detect CHDK 0.9.9.966; see first screenshot.

It's really rough at the moment (searches for known strings), the code is available:

https://github.com/CHDKUtil/Net.Chdk.Detectors.Software.Core
https://github.com/CHDKUtil/Net.Chdk.Detectors.Software.Binary
https://github.com/CHDKUtil/Net.Chdk.Detectors.Software.Chdk
https://github.com/CHDKUtil/Net.Chdk.Detectors.Software.Sdm

The penalty is the minimum .NET version requirement raised to 4.6.

Edit: Moved the base binary detector to Net.Chdk.Detectors.Software.Binary; .NET 4.5.2 will do for now.

Does anybody actually read that beyond the STICK note?

In case anyone was wondering whether there was any new development on this project, here are a couple of new screenshots. It looks like at least on Windows this is about to replace STICK, ASSIST and WASP (the Switch Partitions action is hidden in the screenshot, but it exists).

I also updated the software metadata proposal (the biggest change is the addition of  encoding).

Since the camera (and model) can now be reliably deduced from the software, I'll be retiring the other metadata proposals (I still think the manifest idea is solid).

Anybody? I believe so. Especially people who can't or won't use a Java based utility. In addition to those people who just seem to like doing things their own way.

When I started on that page, the intent was to correctly document all known methods of installing CHDK.  I believe it has and continues to meet that goal.

Being complete and accurate tends to mean it's not a "For Dummies" guide.  Hence the link to STICK at the top of the page. There are several unsuccessful attempts at doing so called simplified guides on the wiki if you want to look for them though.

Having said all of that, it will probably make sense to add a more prominent link to your utility once it's stable even though it's Windows only. Probably at the top of the page with the STICK link in the message box.

I appreciate the hard work put into that page. The problem lies with the attention spans of most people nowadays. Did you consider splitting it into smaller pages, e.g. one per OS?

Yes, thank you. That box at the top is really hard to beat :)

Added Enable/Disable Canon BASIC actions; see screenshot.

Enable Autoboot:
  • Available iff
    • either AUTOEXEC.BIN or DISKBOOT.BIN is present and
    • the card is non-scriptable
  • If AUTOEXEC.BIN is present, the card will be made EOS-bootable
  • If DISKBOOT.BIN is present, the card will be made PowerShot-bootable
Disable Autoboot:
  • Available only if the card is bootable
Enable Canon BASIC:
  • Available only if the card is non-bootable
Disable Canon BASIC:
  • Available only if the card is scriptable
EOSCard seems to be another utility that's about to become obsolete.
