Is there any documentation what can and can't be done while the camera is in factory mode? Can it start running scripts by itself (without user intervention)? Anything interesting?

You need Canon's tools or an equivalent reverse engineered substitute to interact with a camera in factory mode. See https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=4417.25

In the firmware, I found a reference to
Code: [Select]
factory.m in the firmware for the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS 1.00f.  Perhaps it is executed while in factory mode.
