Screen turns off in UBASIC scripts, only viewfinder on (SX50 HS)

Hey everyone,

I am using a SX50 HS and want to script an intervalometer. My problem is that every time I run a script (even the simplest one containing only print and shoot commands) the screen would turn off within a second or so and I can only see stuff through the viewfinder which is almost unreadable.
I reset CHDK settings and searched on the topic but can only find threads on how to switch the display of (which seems too easy for me ;)

I would appreciate your help or hints on this a lot!
Cheers!

The SX50 gives you a choice of using either the camera's LCD screen or its EVF (electronic view finder).  It is either one or the other - you can't get both at the same time.  To switch between them, you press the DISPLAY key on the back of the camera.

It's not clear from your description - does running the script actually take pictures but the display switches to the OVF?  Or does running the script just switch the display to the OVF but no pictures are taken?

If you simply load the default intervalometer script that comes with every CHDK install ( A/CHDK/SCRIPTS/interval.lua ) and then press the shutter key, does it run correctly without changing the display?

Can you post one of the scripts you are using?  Especially the simplest one that does this?

Hey waterwingz,

thanks for your time and quick help (answering slowly because I've been on vacations). Regarding your questions and comments:
1. Pressing display is what I thought should work - it does not. Once I enter ALT mode (with the Shrtct button), pressing it does not have an effect anymore.
2. Your assumption was correct. Program runs as it should but once I start a script, displaying switches from LCD to EVF and I can't come back. For code changes I want to read some params that I am printing out but it's impossible through the EVF, it's just to small and blurry.
3. Running the A/CHDK/SCRIPTS/interval.lua scripts yields the same, switching to EVF immediately.

Maybe I am just missing out a switch or something which would be weird 'cause I set back the settings andd remember the LCD to work in the beginning.

I am curious about your thoughts on this, thanks a lot!

The question still remains for me, does anyone have a clue? Thanks!

Sorry - missed your earlier response.

This is very curious. We have a lot of SX50 users, (including me) and this has not been reported by anyone else.  Which suggests it's something unique that you are doing or it's a hardware problem with your camera.

What version of CHDK are you using? Hopefully a recent one from the auto build download page?

In the meantime, you could try adding a short delay and then a couple of    click "display" statements to the start of your script to see if that switches the display back on?

I'll give this some more thought - it's one of those things that I would not know how to do on purpose.

Also, if you run the Lua version of the shoot script (shoot.lua) rather than the uBASIC version, does the screen still switch to EVF mode?
