Remote control of A650IS with CHDK

I have an old A650IS that I recently used to take pictures of the solar eclipse. The pictures came out much better than I anticipated which reactivated my interest in installing CHDK and see how far I really can push this camera... I have installed CHDK on the sdcard and know how to upload it to the camera for the ongoing session.

I would now like to be able to remote control the camera over USB from a Linux laptop. Reading the information it seems that with a standard USB cable between the camera and the laptop I should be able to script chkdkptp or ptpcam to do pretty much "anything". Would that be a fair statement?

Anything you can do from CHDK script, at least. I'd strongly recommend chdkptp over ptpcam (but I wrote it, so I'm biased ;))

You may have to fight with udev to got get the CHDK extension working from linux, see "Interaction with default software" in https://app.assembla.com/spaces/chdkptp/wiki/Install

The A650 probably also supports the old Canon remote shooting API, which you might be able to control though gphoto. You won't get the same level of control as CHDK from that though.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Great, thank you! I just installed ptpCamGui on an old Vista netbook just to make sure the connection worked - and it did. Now to try it controlling the camera from a Linux machine.
