G7/G9 Dust on sensor, CHDK and Warranty repairs

I bought a G7 used on eBay (in excellent condition, ~500 shots) 4 months ago and have been using it heavily (now ~3000 shots) with CHDK. It has been a great camera, especially with CHDK, until a couple of weeks ago a dark spot showed up in all my photos. After a Google search, I found many complaints in other forums and reviews that dust getting sucked into the lenses each time the lens extends during power-up.  As far as I can tell It is only a major problem for the G7 and G9 in that the photos are unusable after 3-6 months of heavy use because of the dust trapped in the optics.

See http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1010&thread=27198906&page=1

I contacted Canon and they will fix it under warranty even though I bought it used. I did not mention to Canon I'm using CHDK.

My first question, has anyone here seen this issue on their G7, G9 or any other P&S camera? I know DSLRs have issues because of the removable lenses but they are easly cleaned because of the removable lenses.

Second, Has anyone sent their camera in for warranty repair and did Canon give them a hard time for running CHDK? I am a little concerned I may have voided my warranty. If CHDK is truly running in volatile memory then there should be not trace of it as long as I remove the SD card before sending it in.

Thanks.

Exactly. You have nothing to fear. I doubt they would check for firmware modifications anyway.

regarding warranty, you might consider reading this post: CHDK in the media (it is also in the wiki somewhere).
and yes, you are both right, chdk does not make permanent changes (other than increasing the shoot count by huge numbers :D).
by the way how do you know that the camera only was used for 500 shots?
did you check via the vers.req method? this can sometimes lead to surprises, see this thread for example: questions regarding s3is

concerning the dust @ lens: never heard of that particular problem, i heard more of the "e18 error", which occurs when for example sand or dust is sucked into the lenses' motor and the lens is stuck (the gears are stuck), so in theory the picture quality would be ok if only the lens would extend. see this thread for example: Canon & E18 Error

oh, by the way, it really is just a coincidence that all the linked threads were created by me ;) :lol

in my a650 got some dust too... same lens... i saw it after a few days after purchasing it...it does not appear on photos but it can bee seen on the lens after the iris.. i got dust in my a630 too...
but i think i fixed it... vacuum cleaner :D

btw.. on many sites i saw that a650 it feels cheap and it's made of plastic... get a digital multimeter in your hands switch it to ohmmeter and connect the test leads to the front and back "Canon" labels and be surprised... 0.2 ohm

Conductive paint doesn't make plastic much more sturdy, just shiny and more EMC friendly.  ;)

without opening...  the lens mechanism has holes... so if you don't want to send back to service for cleaning and wait a month, you may try to clean it with a vacuum cleaner... i only placed it on the front lens and i zoomed in and out many times and the dust gone from the a650... in the a630 still got some behind the front lens, but it's not disturbing
@fudgey:it's not conductive paint it, both of my cameras got some metal, the back of the flip screen, the top side and on the front side around the lens. these parts feels cold(thermodinamics), the others don't. On the front side it has around 0.9 mm thickness(can be seen when opening battery door)... it's probaly used to increase a little bit the mechanical stability and for shielding electronics against interferences
