Firmware 1.00f for A620

Hello - I am anxious to try CHDK.  The idea it does not permanently alter the camera in any way is great - wrong.  I have to install a unauthorized firmware update first, I now have 1.00e on the camera.  This makes me really nervous, I hate the idea of killing a really nice camera.  What does the 1.00f firmware install?  It is 3.8 mb, not just a few lines of code.  How does it change the camera?  What are the risks, and how do I avoid them?  Does the camera operate normally as before?

I have the firmware and Allbest-50 downloaded onto my computer, I am just nervous about installing them and killing my camera.  Thanks!

I have the exact same cam as you, have upgraded it about 3 month ago to 1.00f in order to be
able to install CHDK and have experienced no problems whatsoever, that is, I did not notice
any change in camera behaviour (except of course that it reports a different version)
This update is AFAIK from Canon, it just has never been publicly released.
As with all firmware updates, make sure that your power (batteries) does not run out during
the update (use a fresh set)
The reason for the size is that the entire firmware will be replaced.

I hope that gives you the info you need.

Thanks for the quick reply, whim, you're very helpful.  I'll recharge the batteries first.  I guess I just put the firmware update on the SD card, insert the card into the camera, and press the menu button to find the firmware update option.  Is that right?  I'll install it tomorrow.

Thanks!

I guess you already read this, but just to sure here's the message of the original poster of
this update:
Quote
That was me (i.e the guy from Singapore). I have upgraded my A620 from firmware 1.00E to rev 1.00F. The memory card error message wasn't a big issue as I'm still able to continue taking photo shots. So the integrity of the SD card was never compromised. I then succeeded in installing the HDK afterwards.

By the way any guys who still have the older version of A620 (1.00E) can also request for the firmware upgrade file from me. I received the copy from JP (freedom2000) earlier. Thanks to him my camera can now accept the HDK mod.
Just a reminder on how to upgrade the firmware to version 1.00F:
1) Copy the "PSA620.FIR" into the root directory of your SD card
2) Insert the SD card into your camera
3) Insert fresh set of batteries into your camera
4) Turn on the camera in playback mode
5) Hit MENU button
6) Scroll down to the bottom of the list option and choose update firmware
7) Update will take less than 1 minute
8) Your camera will turn off automatically afterwards
9) Optional: Wait about 5 minutes before switching on your updated cam

10) Now your A620 should be showing version 1.00F with the dummy file "ver.req" as explained earlier on this forum
11) After that you can install the HDK mod :)

MYaz

which can be found in the wkia FAQ #4: FAQ - CHDK Wiki

As mentioned there, don't forget to remove the file afterwards, or CHDK will not start.

good luck,

wim
