Help needed with RAW, SX400IS

This morning I was lucky enough to go out and shoot the eclipse, BUT: I thought I had my cameras both SX400IS and 500IS set to save RAW. "Save raw" had the dot in it. DNG format and DNG file extension also have a dot. When I reviewed my photos (by going to my computer-- SD Card _ DCIM (DCIM and PS are the only folders there), there are no files with any of the RAW extensions .DNG or any thing else. What is folder PS? Did I not save any RAW? Also when looking at the files in SD Card via above sequence, why does it not show all the CHDK folders and files (the ones related to CHDK program itself)? The SX500 does show in the display screen "DNG:935" and this number is decreasing with each picture taken. Does this mean the camera was already set to save DNG files?

So,  I read through some of the RAW threads pointed to in this forum. I realized that "create bad pixel bin" was something that is not just there but it needed to be clicked to create a bin. I think I did click on it but I am not sure. I suppose I had not created this bin. Is that required to save RAW? So I have done that now after the fact. The line "create bad pixel bin" still does not have any thing after it. May be the developers should consider adding a box against it saying (created).

Another problem that has come up, I do not think it is related to above. Now I am unable to take photos in <ALT> mode. I was running the "counter.bas" this morning with no problems. Camera still takes photos with this script in the intervalometer mode. I changed the script to Default.lua and I cannot take pictures. Pressing the shutter button shows on the screen ***started***   ***finished*** and a picture is not taken. It is same on both cameras. Is works fine in the non-alt (native canon) mode. So it must be a setting problem. Please help fix this new problem too.

I have never used RAW format before and really don't know much about it and was planning to start today. Is there a primer online on various steps of how to proceed with RAW files?

I hope I have made sense in my questions. Thanks for the help.

Well, something is clearly wrong here as there appears to be no CHDK folder. And from what you have described, CHDK is clearly there and running.

First question - is the SD card in a card reader on your computer or are you attached to your camera with a USB cable and the card is still in the camera?

Based on seeing "DNG:935" on your screen, you are saving RAW (okay .. DNG formatted raw) on your camera.

You have never been able to take photos in <ALT> mode.  Pressing the shutter button simply starts the currently loaded script.  Always has.  When you made default.lua your current script and pressed the shutter button, the script ran and did .. well ... nothing.  Because that's what the default script does.

Thank you for quick reply.

The SD Card is still in the camera, connected to PC with USB cable. Ok, I took the card out of camera and plugged it directly into the PC. Yes, all the various folders are present. IN SX400IS a folder called RAW is also present. There are only 2 files present in this folder. I have not opened these files. I assume these were created when the "create bin" command was executed. In the DCIM folder there are both CRW and IMG files from the eclipse. IN SX500IS there is a folder DCIM and in that both CRW_number and IMG_number files are present. From the number of CRW photos it appears that those are from the eclipse.

So, creation of of bad pixel bin really is not need for saving RAW.

Is there some thing that can be done to also see these files/folders when connected via USB cable?

"DNG:935" is showing only on the SX500. There is no such indicator on the SX400. I do not know if it is just a matter of options available to display. In SX400 CHDK menu, under the chdk settings-- osd settings -- RAW -- "RAW showing settings" and "show RAW shoot remain" are both checked.

I thought I have taken pictures before in the ALT mode but may be I am mistaken. So, once I make the various selections in the CHDK menu, for example: OverrideTV- long exposure. Do I exit the alt mode to actually take a picture? Will the selections made in CHDK menu still be active in the non-alt mode? Does this also mean one cannot take photos with just the normal canon settings? I have the question "disable overrides" answered as "no". If that question is answered "yes" how will that change things?

Thanks again.

I do not know how to quote portions of text in the blue box.

This is more a Canon software issue.  But you might be able to change the extension used for RAW/DNG file names in the CHDK RAW menu to something that will trick your PC into seeing the files.  Experiment a bit - no guarantees here.

You'll want to change the extension back to DNG once you have uploaded the file to your PC.

Is Show OSD [ * ] checked in the OSD menu?

You may have run a script that took pictures in <ALT> mode, but you have never taken one directly.

Yes.  And the setting you picked will override the normal Canon settings when you actually take a photo.

Yes.

If overrides are disabled, then you get the normal Canon settings.

See my previous answer.

I guess it would be lot easier just to put the card in the PC and copy the files?

Yes, show OSD is checked.

I suppose to use the normal canon functions, I would have to answer the "disable overrides" as yes. Then the overrides will be inactive or I have to turn power off and on again?

Thanks.

You do not need to cycle the power.
