Location Information from a Windows Phone?

Not really a hardware question, but this seems the least-wrong place to ask for insights on providing an SX730 with location/GPS information from a Windows phone. Canon only provide the "Camera Connect" app for iPhone & Android and say the protocol is proprietary and can't be discussed. I like to fantasise that the protocol is elegant and would permit me to write a simple app providing location updates without needing to provide support for everything else the Canon app can do... Perhaps somebody here knows about the "Camera Connect" interfaces, or better yet of an existing WP app for this?

Sigh ... let's just say this would be a really really big project and nothing much in CHDK would help make that easier.

But I just have to say it (given that its 2018 now)  - a Windows Phone?  Really?

I'm not aware of anyone doing any significant work reverse engineering the phone app protocol. This could be a productive area for exploration.

The cameras use  UPnP + PTP/IP for connection to PCs, but from the firmware it's clear phones use a different protocol. I looked into the PTP/IP extensively (https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=10724.0) but didn't didn't ultimately get anything really useful working.

We cater to people running BASIC on 10 year old P&S, so I wouldn't throw too many stones  :haha

That said, the  programmer time required to reverse engineer the protocol and create a compatible client would certainly exceed that of a top of the line android or iphone.

Don't forget what the H stands for.

Thanks! Most illuminating - though reading about PTP has a distressing feel of DLNA-all-over-again to it. At least in this case it's a single manufacturer interpreting their own spec. Hopefully a little Bluetooth logging from an Android device will suggest how deep the mud is.

Yep, one man's "quixotic" is another's "daft"  :D
