If you can avoid moving the camera, that would make comparison easier.

As I mentioned before, on thing that can happen is the software distortion correction can be set incorrectly in some cases. I don't know of a way it would end up different in your case, since the script is always setting zoom, but comparing raw should make it clear whether it's software or optical.

I am thinking about designing a brace that would prevent movement of the camera when i operate it, but that will take some time.

These specific pictures were from 2 series of 5000 shots and so I was a bit late to discover that I could not recut them to overlap and so probably are going to bin them.
If it is the software distortion correction that was initialized wrong for some reason I have to look for a different camera with a fixed lens.
Because it annoying that weeks of shots are lost due to a different choice by the software.
With a fixed lens I can then make a brace for the lens instead of the camera, making positioning more stable.

And I haven't been able to reproduce this much distortion in the past few days of trying and testing, I've found some though but within those few pixels you mentioned..i'd say 10.
And I will put raw on at my next tests.

If it's a software problem, it's should be fixable. It wouldn't be just random, it would be some specific sequence of actions that make it use a different setting. I don't think this is super likely, but it's worth checking for.

Was each series the same, or did it change randomly in the middle somewhere? If you can identify the point where it changed, that might provide some clues. If you kept logs from the script that might help too.

Again, I don't think this is just normal variation, more likely a bug, or an unintended setting change, or maybe a hardware issue (but I'd expect you to get lens errors if the zoom failed to move the correct amount)
Don't forget what the H stands for.

each series was the same. it changed after reboot only, so it could be true that i made a mistake in sequence and accidently changed some setting before the script started. this must be a setting that is not visible in the log.
Although i've done that a lot, I cannot exclude me making a one time mistake...
I have the script logs, they look identical in settings etc. so no help there

And no lens errors yet on this one.

After some testing I found out that most times when there was a distortion visible was when I choose a zoom% that is between the factory settings you can choose with the ring. (so 10%, 20%, 40%, 50%, 70%, 80% give a bigger chance of different settings after a restart, my trouble started with setting 70% zoom in UI)

I also have seen a small F stop difference(f/2.2-f/2.5) between 20% and 30%, but it both still registers as 7mm..so the mm zoom that is logged with a picture seems more an indication than a true lens position.
because lowest f is related to the physical zoomfactor.
this is completely speculative, maybe if the percentage comes close to a factory optimised setting it sometimes latches to that setting?
is zoom_setpoint lineair?

what I do see is that if I choose a setting (like 30%) but first have put the camera on that setting (35mm) manually before I start the script that sometimes the zoom lens is shortly operated zooming fractional in and out and other times not. and after those moments it zooms there is a small distortion visible in the pictures taken.

And no matter what zoom percentage I choose in ultimate intervallometer, the camera still firmly believes it is shooting at 28mm(6mm) and displays so on screen....maybe that can also lead to wrong choices in the cameras barrel distortion?

For the S95: (for each percentage booting the camera in chdk & starting UI)
0%=6mm (step 0)
10%=6mm
20%=7mm
30%=7mm..you'd expect this being 8mm, but since f/2.5 and 7mm it is the setting you see with step 1
40%=9mm
50%=10mm
60%=11mm (step 2)
70%=13mm
80%=15mm
90%=18mm (step 3)
100%=22mm (step 4)
factory settings with use of ring:
step 0=6mm (28mm)
step 1=7mm with f/2.5 (35mm)
step 2=11mm (50mm)
step 3=18mm (85mm)
step 4=22mm (105mm)

I've tried several settings, but I would like to know what the camera registers as zoom.
that could help to see if the difference between shoots is related to software or hardware

could I add Zoom value (FL) to the log function in Ultimate Intervalometer? And if so, how could I best do that?
