How can I make background black?

I'm working on a game for my camera. I just can't figure out how I would make the background black and then have other things on top (like squares and circles (I do know how to make them)).

I have a rectangle that is the size of the screen, but it flickers and shapes on the background just makes everything worse! How was Sudoku's white beautiful background made and how can I make it myself?

Generally speaking, I think they only erase what needs to be erased, rather than drawing a blank screen and building on it. CHDK does not support double buffered drawing or synchronizing with physical refresh.
