Flash "softening" on SD870

hi everyone, this project is AMAZING and it's the only reason why I am upgrading my trusty 4 megapixel SD - I want to use all these features!

please excuse my newbie question, but I  woule like to know if there is a feature for "softening" the flash, which is I think the weakest point of powershots - too much white burning on faces. I've found fancy stuff like High-Speed Shutter & Flash-Sync on the FAQ, but nothing about just getting a less powerful flash (it's always struck me that powershots have only one flash power setting...).

any ideas? thanks!

mmhhh... that's a native feature of some powershots.

I am not 100% sure, as my a570 has it and I have never explored this too much, but as far as I know CHDK does not help in this.

@guyoforward

why not experiment with various thickness of white paper ? Or use a small mirror to bounce flash off ceilings ?
it's just like CHDK: cheap and completely reversible  :D

Toilet paper is perfect for that :-)

I can set my flash to various output power levels,on a620 and s3is.

yeah, I've tried the tissue/toilet paper hack :)
but it's kind of rudimentary, compared to different flash levels by means of electronics!
is it possible to replicate the a620/s3is/etc. setting for the sd cameras without it? or is there a hardware limitation?

I also would like to have more steps, even in Powershot.
I have A710 and there are only four steps, off, low,medium,full.
A step between low and medium would be nice.
Till there is a software solution, I prefer using a simple but useful aluminium-foil with white paper hardware "extension". ::)

are these steps available at all on the stock sd firmware? on chdk?
