No EXIF data for .DNG files?

Hello, SX530HS: I am saving the RAW files as CRW_ prefix and .DNG extension. When connected to PC via USB cable, it does not show .DNG files. I understand that is normal in CHDK. When SD card inserted directly into PC, it sees the DNG files. When I open the "properties" for the JPEG files  it shows the EXIF data but not for .DNG files. Is this normal?

yes
It depends apparently on what software package you use to view the DNG file ...

So, is there a way to get that info? I have not done any post-processing yet. Will absence of EXIF data cause problem with processing?

You could makes a JPG as well and copy EXIF data with EXIFTOOL to DNG.

CHDK saves a lot of metadata to the DNG EXIF tables and this should be visible in the properties of the file.

What operating system are you using? Since you said "properties" I assume its some version of windows.

I have just tested this on Windows 10 and my G12 and the CHDK DNG metadata shows up just fine (see attached image).

You can also use the exiftool program to view all the metadata stored in the CHDK DNG files.

Just looked at some of my DNG's with RawTherapee (on Linux).  There is a lot of information there that could only have come from EXIF information.

Interesting, my windows 10 system shows the exif entry names for CHDK DNGs, but not the values. I tried DNGs from several different cameras with the same result.

I did have the "Adobe DNG codec 2.0" installed, which IIRC previously allowed viewing DNG thumbnails in explorer, but doesn't seem to any more. Uninstalling it removed the exif section from details completely.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

I am on Windows 8.1. The camera is SX530 HS with CHDK. The extension chosen in the RAW menu under CHDK is .CRW (not .DNG as written in my original post) but it is saved as  .DNG file.

I have attached screen shots of the properties screen, 2 at a time in two posts, properties from Windows explorer- properties - details. The JPG photos show EXIF data and .DNG don't. A question arose in my mind: if I selected a different extension in RAW will the info be different. So I took photos after selecting extensions CRW, CR2, THM, WAV, JPG. They all showed "file type" to be .DNG and none showed EXIF data.

NEW QUESTION: Even though the Exif data does not show, I assume it is there. Is Photoshop or Gimp still able to see that data and use it in its editing processes?

The CHDK menu under RAW has two settings "Raw file extension" Vs "Raw operations extension". What is the difference?

Yes. To summarize:
* CHDK DNG always include exif.
* Programs that properly understand DNG files will see the exif values
* Whether the exif is displayed or not in Windows properties dialog depends on windows stuff, including the presence of 3rd party extensions like the Adobe DNG codec.

Gimp doesn't natively understand DNG at all, and doesn't do much with exif values in formats it does understand. You need to use a raw processing program or plugin to open DNGs. AFAIK the same is true of photoshop.

In general, if you want to get good results from raw, you should use a dedicated raw processing program such as lightroom, raw therapee, darktable etc. to "develop" the image. If you need to do additional processing in gimp or photoshop, you would develop in the raw software first, export to a lossless format like tiff and then edit.

Raw file extension is the extension used when shooting. Raw operations is for in camera raw processing, like sum, average etc.
