USB charging

I have an SX720-HS camera.
I cannot charge it using my standard USB cables and chargers. Camera is equipped with external battery charger.
BUT
Canon says:
Quote
A USB cable can be used to charge the camera's battery.
Insert the included battery into the camera for charging.
You can use the compact power adapter, or a computer to charge the battery.
https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART164998&cat=1070C&actp=LIST

But according to Canon, to charge my camera through USB cable I should purchase a $50 proprietary charger and a specific IFC-600PCU  USB cable for additional 20$, which is quite ridiculous.

I am trying to figure out if USB-charging is enabled by hardware (specific wiring of USB cable?) or by SW (setting in firmware?)

Can anybody help?

The page you linked says it will also charge from a computer USB. Does it? If so, then a powered hub might work too, without a computer.

This note is odd:

With some computers, battery charging may require the memory card to be in the camera. Insert the memory card in the camera before connecting the cable to the computer's USB port.

Without a working example to reverse engineer, this might be difficult to figure out.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
