Is it possible to control the SX50 from a Macbook (or PC)? It used to be possible with the S1 that I had years ago and it would be very useful to be able to do it.

The official Canon SDK that was used for old cameras like S1 is not supported by modern cameras like SX50, but you can use the CHDK PTP extension https://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/PTP_Extension

Official chdkptp builds (https://app.assembla.com/spaces/chdkptp/wiki) are only available for Windows and Linux, but some people have managed to build on Mac, see https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=6231.msg135827#msg135827

If you aren't up for building it yourself, you may be able to run it in a virtual machine with USB pass-through. I have had success doing this with virtualbox.

Thanks for getting back to me. I've followed the links and it looks as if I might need to wait a while for further developments . I have no idea how to code so I must rely on the good offices of guys like you. So many thanks for your efforts.

The documentation is pretty scattered, but if you can use a windows or linux PC (or a raspberry pi), you don't need to do any coding or compiling. Pre-built chdkptp binaries are available from https://app.assembla.com/spaces/chdkptp/documents

Installation instructions are at https://app.assembla.com/spaces/chdkptp/wiki/Install

You would also need to install CHDK on your sx50, if you haven't already.
