+I activated the stickx file. It doesn't say "stickx.cmd" but it is shown to be a COMMAND file. I associated Microsoft Word with the file type, when prompted. When I tried to open stickx, the result was several pages of machine language but no recognizable references to the STICK process.
Oh dear.  It seems you tried to "open" the command file rather that "execute" or "run" it.

To run the file, right click once on its icon. In the resulting pop up menu, select "Run as administrator"

Waterwingz:
You're right: that's what I did.
I DO see the "Run as administrator" choice now. I've tried it,
however something's still wrong; I get a flash of another page, and then it's gone.
Did the screenshot that I sent before look as though all the files that should be together were there?

Had to go find a Windows 10 Home machine.  I see the same thing now - it appears I gave you bad advice.

What you really need to do is "double click left" on the stickx (stickx.cmd) file to run it.  When run, that file elevates the priority of the app so that it can access the SD card reader. Running it as an administrator is apparently a "no no".

Yes - they are fine.

Well, I'm glad all the files are there.
However, I'm back where I was this morning:
The stickx.cmd file just opens and shows me pages of machine language.
I remember, now, that it is the same thing that happens when I mistakenly try to open an Excel file with Word.
So, what APP should I use to open a .cmd file?

You don’t “open” a .cmd file except to edit it. You “run" it - it's a computer program.  Normally you do that by double clicking it, or typing its name in a DOS box command prompt.

I suspect what you've done is messed up your Windows system a bit by associating the .cmd extension with MSWord. So rather than running the program it tries to open it in Word when you click on it.   There is probably a way to reset that but I'll have to look later.

EDIT :
Steps to Restore Default File Extension Type Associations in Windows 10
  • Open Start Menu and go to Settings.
  • Go to System.
  • Tap on Default Apps.
  • In the right pane, tap on Reset button under Reset Microsoft default options.

How to undo "Always open with" option in Windows 10
  • Press Windows + X keys and select Control Panel.
  • Select Default Programs. Select Set your default programs.
  • Select the application and right side click on Set this program as default.
  • Again click on the application left side and click on Choose default programs for this application in the right side.
  • Check the Select all and click on Save changes.
  • Restart the application and check if the issue persists.

SUCCESS! (up to a point)...
Resetting the Microsoft defaults did NOT reset the APP for the .cmd file, even after restarting the computer. However, I tried the whole process on another computer (on which I had NOT wrecked the file association) and the process of preparing the SD card went all the way to the end. I was instructed to lock the card and put it into the camera, which I have done.
I can't really remember what to do next. (The thread of this conversation only goes back to yesterday, as far as I can see.)
Please give me a step-by-step for getting the new info from the card to the camera's processor and what do do each time I want to use the camera with the new exposure capabilities.
Very excited about the progress made today!
Thank you,
Geezer6711

Well, I guess fixing that is a project for another day.  I don't really do Windows support  ::)

After you put the SD card with the switch in the "lock" position into your camera, what did you see on the LCD display when you turned the camera on?  The CHDK logo?  Or a message saying "Card Locked" ?

Hint : the default <ALT> key for the SX60 is a short press on the Playback button.  You can change that via the CHDK menus to use the Video or Wifi buttons.

When I turn on the LCD with the PLAY button ("Alt" according to the User Guide that you sent me) quickly or even slowly, the "Memory card locked" message appears. Nothing changes that; I see no messages about CHDK.
When I scroll through the menus, I do NOT find a place to upgrade the firmware.
I've tried using the MENU button and the all four parts of the set of ring switches that's around the FUNC SET button. (I've tried these with the screen active and also with the screen dark.
I have to get past this point before I can follow the procedures in the User Guide and/or the CHDK Dummies Guide. There must be something specific to this camera that I am still missing.

The "Memory Card Locked" message means the SD card is not correctly formatted to autoboot CHDK via the "SD Card Lock" method.

STICK was supposed to have done that for you so something went wrong when you ran STICK.  If it's done correctly, you will briefly see the CHDK Logo on you LCD screen when you power on your camera (with either the on/off button or the playback button).

STICK creates a log file called sticklog.txt in the same folder all its other files are stored in.  Can you locate that on the machine you used to run STICK on your SD card and post it here as an attachment?

You are trying to use the other method of loading CHDK here - called the "Firmware Update" method.  Unfortunately it's not supported for the DIGIC6 cameras like the SX60 so you can't follow these steps.

That file is not there.

Strange, because the process for configuring the card seemed to move right along when I used the right computer. I feel as though we're so close...
