Radically different characteristics, ie 4000+ steps vs some 200.

Looks like different approaches are required.

Getting near the end of the year  ;)
Did you make any further progress in understanding and/or uncovering Lua based focus hooks/info on the M3?
Cheers and have a great New Year's Eve

No, unfortunately I had very little time this year ...

I have now played with my EF 100mm f / 2.8 macro usm on M3 again. Everything here is what I would expect. Whether I move the focus once by 200 steps or 200 times by one step, always results in the same distance of around 8.7mm (at the near focus limit of 310mm).

200 * 1   Step  = 8,7mm
100 * 2   Steps = 8,7mm
50  * 4   Steps = 8,7mm
40  * 5   Steps = 8,7mm
20  * 10  Steps = 8,7mm
10  * 20  Steps = 8,7mm
1   * 200 Steps = 8,7mm

Looks good. Haven’t had a lot of time to play around myself, as I gone over to the dark side and got myself a secondhand OM-D M5II to experiment with.

Cheers

You are not happy with your Canon anymore?
Here a picture with my Canon EF 100mm f / 2.8 macro usm.
EOS M3, f8, distance to the object 31cm. The ruler is inclined approximately 30 degrees.
According to the DoF calculator, this should actually result in a depth of field of 2mm.
When I look at that, it looks more like 1mm.
Yes I know, you cannot rely on the Dof calculator in the macro range.

Absolutely not. I’m just a gear head and was attracted to the OMD M5 II because I can use my Canon lenses with an ND Throttle, I can use Live Time for long exposures, it’s got focus bracketing built in and it’s small and light for travel.

A bit of fun  :)
