Trouble Using ver.req

This is my first post; I hope I put it in the right section.
The camera in question is Canon PowerShot Digital ELPH SD870 IS
I am trying to ascertain the firmware version by using ver.req
I created a blank notepad file and have tried it in various places within an SD-card
No matter where I put the file, I always only ever get "Version 1.0.0.0"
I have read, reread, and reread again the instructions on how to do this; and, as best I can tell, I am doing things correctly.
Can someone please advise?

I'd suggest you use one of the applications that detects the version for you, such as Stick or ACID

If you want to continue trying the req file method:
One possible problem is that you have windows file extensions hidden, so the file is actually being name vers.req.txt. It needs to have the .req extension alone. Also note the final letter is Q not G.

The ONLY place this will work is in the root of the SD card, there's no need to put it elsewhere.

It's possible that vers.req (with an s) will work on this camera, though the wiki entry specific says ver.req. (Canon uses both files, but not all models respond to the same one)

You are correct about the hidden extensions.
I have now made extensions visible (in folder options) and have made numerous attempts at saving a file without the .txt being added on; try as I may, it insists on adding the extension.
What am I missing ?

As for the automatic install programs, thus far I had been avoiding Stick on account of Java, which I have managed to get by without for years; however, I have just now downloaded Java; and, if I can't skin this cat any other way, I will install Java, make my SD-cards, and then uninstall it until the next time I get forced into a corner.

Use File Explorer and select the file.  Right click with your mouse and choose the Rename option.  Edit the file name in place.

Assuming from your reference to notepad that you are on Windows, you could try CHIMP instead of STICK.

Edit : if you just want your firmware version, take a picture of your wall, save it somewhere public, and PM me a link.  I'll run ACID on it for you.

Yes; 64-bit Windows 7 Pro on this machine; almost had forgotten ---- Mint Cinnamon some-such-or-other resides on another partition but I got busy trying to learn other things and sort of forgot all about it.

Thanks for making me aware of options, both for renaming the file and also as an alternate to Stick.

I do have Advanced Renamer; I wonder if it might do the trick.

I know that I can do this with one of the automatic programs; but, when something so simple as this ver.req business runs me in on a lee shore, it worries me silly until I get to the bottom of things.

Notepad might insert a hidden .txt extension but you should not be seeing File Explorer changing file extensions on it's own.  Go ahead with Advanced Renamer if it works for you but it really should not be necessary.

Regardless of how I go about it, I can't get rid of that silly .txt extension.
Any tool I use to rename the file only highlights the ver.req and not the suffix.
I thought I had a winner when I tried Advanced Renamer; but, when I then checked the file in Explorer, the suffix was still there.
The dozens and dozens of people that describe how to use ver.req just gloss over this suffix-less file creating business as though it was a piece of cake.

I used Stick and quickly/easily accomplished my task; but, I still want to know why I can't seem to get rid of that .txt suffix.

To be frank, this does not sound like a problem with CHDK.

Can you rename other files?  For example, change one of your image file names from IMG_0234.JPG to IMG_0234.BAD.   Or a spreadsheet from BUDGET.XLS to BUDGET.DOC ?

I don't know; I never really had any reason to change a suffix before.
I will ask about this on the Windows forums.

In a round-about way, I do now have a ver.req file minus an added suffix; when I was poking around to see what kind of files Stick added to my folders, right there amongst them it was.
I just copied it into my CHDK accessories folder, just in case I needed it before I get this suffix changing business figured out.
