reboot after 21 days worked, but with fault

I have tested a more than 3 weeks shoot with reboot and it seemed to work perfectly, but 1300 pictures after the reboot the camera failed and i have no indication of why...
it just looked dead and was still drawing current as if it was working.

after a change of sd card and a restart the camera seems to work properly again. (i checked the sd card it also works as expected)

the only thing i could find in the log was that it stated a fault, but since it did start shooting again i think it is not related.
I also noticed that after the reboot not all data that is logged when you start the script was logged again after the reboot, but maybe that is just how UI is programmed?
however, what could trigger that fault?

herebelow a small portion of the log with the fault on switching to shooting mode.

Not sure if a Camera crash logs (romlog) would give you more information…

there was no romlog and as far as i know that is made automatically when the cam software crashes.

Code: [Select]
the romlog can be saved from the CHDK menu, using "miscellaneous stuff->Debug Parameters->Save ROM crash log"

Why?  If there was a crash, a ROM log has already been stored in your camera's memory. The quoted CHDK menu option is just used to dump it to a file so that you can read it.

Day 21 Sat Jun  1 11:51:08 2019 fault on switch to shooting mode
The script logs this if set_record fails. If this happened, then all subsequent shooting would likely also fail (though later attempts to shoot of half press could coincidentally switch to rec on many cameras)

Does the log continue significantly after the part your posted, or does it end there?

Was the lens extended?

If the camera was running, it's unlikely a romlog was generated.

How many images were on the camera when the reboot happened? You previously mentioned long "indexing" times, which could conceivably prevent the rec switch from working.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

it made about 1300 subsequent shots after set_record failed and so does the UI log...the log and stored pics then just stopped without any indication.

the lens was not retracted. led's were not flashing.
power consumption was around 0.6A suggesting it was still doing something...but i only discovered it was not taking pictures a day after it had stopped storing them, so it was definately not recovering from whatever was happening.
(I apparantly missed it was not making the shutter sound, while that was a constant reminder the cam was running)

The long indexing time did not seem to disturb reboot, although the log states it was twice the reboot time (2.5 minutes) i had while testing the same setup(1.5 min. reboot).
indexing with all those pictures takes about 15 minutes on this cam.

In total the setup made 59.795 pictures before it failed, 1300 of those after the reboot. (don't worry, i won't turn it into a boring 30+ minutes video)

When i inserted another SD card (without card lock) the cam booted regulary but stated it had a locked card..i had to re-insert it (twice) before it got that it was an unlocked card.

Since the setup is on an UPS a short power failure seems unlikely.
Outside temp was around 30C and so temp of the sensor was also fairly high (42C), but had been higher a few hours before it stopped. (it stopped @ sunset)

That's an extremely high number of shots. More than my SX50 ever did. Maybe there is a maximum of images that the camera can manage.
I would take an SD card with 59790 shots and start a run ...

All things considered I think it is amaizing that it survived this run, when i found it non-functional with power consumption i thought it had finally died on me...
but since it works again it annoyes me that i have no indication of what went wrong..it makes it a risk to run it without supervision for such a long period.

for your info, this test-cam has made some 1.5M shots in total(with a maximum of 1 week per run, except for this time)...it is missing a few more pixels today and shots might be a bit darker than when i started using it.
but hey, canon states something like 30.000-50.000 pictures.
