Yes, you're right; I don't want to remove the card from the camera; but explorer doesn't recognize the raw files while the card is in the camera, so I can't even see them. If I remove the card from the camera and put it into the card reader ... voila, there they are.
..... john

However, Windows (7) explorer will not allow me  to change the file extension while the SD card is in the camera, only if it's in the card reader; which defeats the purpose, because dng files show up in the card reader anyway.
The entire issue is resolvable if I simply remove the SD card from the camera and put it into the card reader, which is what I will do in the future.
I thought the whole point here was that you did not want to remove the SD card from the camera?  If so, copy the file from the camera to your PC and rename it there?

I have checked the 'save RAW', 'with JPG, and 'DNG visible via USB', but they do not show
FWIW, 'DNG visible via USB' appearing in this port is almost certainly a bug. AFAIK this feature only worked on VxWorks cameras, not  DryOS cameras like SX100. Checking it might cause problems, since it pokes some unknown variables. (edit: probably wrong, see below. s5is is another DryOS camera which has this feature implemented)

With that option unchecked, I'd suggest trying "raw prefix" CRW_, raw extension ".CR2", and "DNG extension" unchecked.  You may still need to rename the files from .CR2 to .DNG after downloading.

One other thing to watch out for is that you must restart the camera between shooting and connecting over USB to see CHDK files.

An alternative is use chdkptp to download files https://app.assembla.com/space/chdkptp/wiki but this has other inconveniences...

This feature works for me (my cam has the 100c firmware). The sx100 is an early DryOS camera, maybe that's why.
But I'm on Linux, so the PC side uses gphoto based code - I don't know whether that should make a difference.

edit:
I connected the same camera to a PC running Windows Vista. Result: the DNGs did NOT show up.

Interesting. Just to confirm, they show up with "DNG extension" set?

I may well have mis-rembered this history of this feature.

Which prefix did you use? Windows may have its own quirks depending on the specific options.

The extension is DNG.

The prefix is CRW, so CRW_0123.DNG is a filename.
I won't be rebooting now, so OP could maybe check if changing the raw file prefix to something else helps? Native raw has the same IMG_ prefix as the jpeg.

Alright. I'm very confused here. I've always laboured under the assumption that a file's prefix has absolutely nothing to do with what will open it; and that the extension determines what program will open what file.
That aside, please confirm what you want me to try, as described below. Uncheck 'DNG' file extension, under the DNG heading. The other items I'm not so sure about.
A Raw file prefixB Raw file extensionC Raw operation prefixD Raw operation extensionWhat do you suggest I try with these?Sorry, I find the various terms confusing. Thanks,

Alright. I'm very confused here. I've always laboured under the assumption that a file's prefix has absolutely nothing to do with what will open it;
The prefix has no impact on how windows will open it. However, it may impact whether or not it's visible when you connect the camera via USB and use windows to browse it. This is specific to how the camera and windows interact, not a general windows feature like extensions.

In my long ago testing (https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=2045.msg18862#msg18862) it seemed that using the same prefix with different extensions confused something. I recall people complaining about this on cameras that support native raw even without CHDK, requiring the use of Canon or 3rd party software.

Based on srsa_4c's comments above, I'd start by trying
RAW File Folder withJPG
RAW File Prefix CRW_
...
DNG Format *
'DNG' File extension *
DNG Visible via USB *

The other settings shouldn't matter in that case. The raw operation ones are only relevant if you use feature like "raw sum" or "raw average" from the file browser, and RAW extension only applies when 'DNG' File extension is unchecked. And again, if you are testing at your computer, be sure to turn off the camera between shooting and plugging in the USB cable.

Hi reyalp,       No luck. It doesn't show up on the SD card in the camera. Viewing the  SD card in the reader, it shows up as CRW_9326.DNG.... john

FWIW, what happens with a card reader is basically irrelevant to the problem you are trying to solve. Windows shows you everything on a reader by default, subject to the normal hidden/system settings.

The method used to access the cameras (PTP) is a totally different thing, with much more limited capability even before you get into CHDK issues.

You could try the same settings with
'DNG' File extension - unchecked
DNG Visible via USB - unchecked.

Others have reported that CRW_nnnn.CR2 works over USB on some cameras.

If this works, your DNG files will show up with a .CR2 extension, which might confuse some software. In that case, you'd need to rename to make the extension .DNG after downloading.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
