STICK Can't Find CHDK Build (Even Though It Exists)

Update:

Installed and executed CHIMP, with a 32GB micro-SD card in an SD adapter in the card reader (which is ok according to the CHIMP interface). The micro-SD card contained a single image from the camera of interest (Canon SX120IS).

By all appearances, CHIMP executed successfully. However, the Windows 7 operating system now (at least via right-click/Properties) sees this card as simply FAT (vs FAT32) format, with a capacity of ~2MB.

I then inserted this CHIMP-prepared SD card into the camera itself and turned the camera on. No CHDK splash appears, but normal camera display shows "Memory card full".

So, another step forward I guess, but still not there.

It says full, not locked?

Did you set the write protect lock on the adapter (assuming it has one)?

Thank you reyalp, another step forward! I neglected the write-protection step. I started from scratch and ran CHIMP again, re-prepared the SD card, and then enabled write protection (moved tab *away* from contacts).

I then inserted the card into the camera and pushed the ON button. Camera wouldn't turn on! Then removed card, camera would turn on normally (although complaining about no memory card).

Long story short, I discovered you have to hold the ON button down longer than normal when using a bootable SD card with CHDK. Not dramatically longer, less than a second, but definitely noticeable.

Anyway, I did get the CHDK splash screen, and was able to snap an image. Hooray!

However, when I then put the SD card into the computer (Windows 7 64-bit) card reader, it only sees the small FAT16 partition and associated files, NOT the much larger FAT32 partition with the images.

I know I'm close, thanks for any help getting me over this last hurdle!

That's a bit strange.  Once CHDK is successfully installed on an SD card and the "Lock" switch enabled, the camera will always start in "Playback" mode (i.e. review mode - lens not extended) when the power button is pressed.  If you hold down the power button for about 1 second when you start the camera, it will start and switch to "Record" mode (i.e. image taking with lens extended) immediately. 

According to you, only the second scenerio works on your camera? Or did you just not notice that the camera was starting in Playback mode because the lens did not extend?

This is normal.  Win7 cannot deal with SD cards having multiple partitions - you only see the first partition when you look at the card.  There are basically three choices.
  • use the "Swap Partition" option in CHDK's Miscellaneous Stuff -> SD card menu to swap the partition order just before you take the card out of your camera.
  • use Dave Mitchells' WASP utility on your PC to swap partitions
  • update to Win10 or switch to Linux  :-X

Note : if you use option 1, you will have to boot CHDK using the "Firmware Update" method when you return the SD card to your camera, and then select the Miscellaneous Stuff -> SD card menu to swap the partition order back for autobooting.

So I see! Thanks for the list of workarounds. CHIMP will also perform the partition swap as it turns out. It can also be done manually with a command window and the DISKPART utility. All seem to require removing the SD card and re-inserting it before the swap is recognized. Kind of a laborious protocol to go through the cycle of booting CHDK on the camera, taking images, getting them transferred to the PC, and then get back into CHDK/shooting mode on the camera. But I'm happy to report that I have successfully done so! I'm sure it'll go more smoothly with practice.

I'm not intimately familiar with this camera (SX120IS), only been using it for about a month. It has always come on in Record mode (i.e., lens extends immediately), and it never requires more than an instantaneous click of the ON/OFF button to come to life.

With a bootable (locked) SD card with CHDK inserted, a quick click of the ON/OFF button produces no response whatsoever... the LCD monitor remains dark, lens does not extend. However, pressing it for ~1/2 sec brings it to life in Record mode (lens extends). I had assumed this was just due to the camera loading the CHDK code, but maybe I'm still not configured properly.

I used 4G cards as they don't need to be formatted with dual partitions.  You can get a lot of photos from a pre-2011 camera on a 4G card.  If you can't find 4G cards online, you can format larger ones to that size (FAT16).

Correct - without CHDK loading that is the normal behaviour.

That's bug in the CHDK port for the SX120IS then.

That's the normal method of getting CHDK to load with the camera in shooting mode rather than playback (as I mentioned earlier).

I'll definitely take your advice on switching to a 4GB card, seems like it will be a lot less hassle. It's only a 10 Mpx camera, so room for plenty of images on the card, probably ~200+ even in raw mode.

Not too worried about not getting Playback mode on start-up, although I admit it gives me some anxiety about what other glitches may be present in this port of CHDK. But, it is a hack (says so right in the name), so no room to complain. I'm definitely impressed with what it can (allegedly) do, can't wait to try out the various features.

Thanks so much for the help getting me started, no doubt I'll be back with more questions!
