I have a Canon A720IS with Allbest v50.

I've read many topics about raw editing, but at this point i'm really confused. I can't find 2 (TWO) programs that open the DNG file (converted with dng4ps2, latest build) the same way.

Here are some examples (SCREENSHOTS, not exports!). Images are as loaded from the various programs; programs are all fresh installs.


JPG directly from camera, as seen on Acdsee. These are also the colors that i see on the camera LCD screen, so i take this as a reference.



Photoshop CS3



Lightroom 2 beta (images turns blueish after some seconds of loading. Initially they're like on Picasa)



Picasa (latest)



Are you gonna tell me this is NORMAL?  :'(

When you "open" a RAW file, what you see on the screen will depend on the particular settings of the software used. White balance, temperature, sharpening etc. In your case, maybe you are using the default settings on Photoshop, Picasa etc.

The idea of RAW processing is to get an output to your liking, even if it's way different from the original JPG or other software's RAW.

That Lightroom one is just weird. I used Lightroom for my S3 RAWs and it wasn't that purple.

I think you should go through this post (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,1156.0.html) and then decide whether you want to use raw.

wontolla: I know that it's normal to get different "starting points" on different softwares. What i really don't know is why they're SO BIG with the raw files produced by my A720IS. I didn't notice so big differences using some raw files from a Nikon DSLR. Maybe it's a dng4ps-2 fault?

ripwink: i'm using JPG regularly, and just use Picasa to crop and resize, but I need RAW for some bad-taken overexposed pictures.

currently there is no way to store the white-balance parameters to the RAW-files that were used by the camera to devolp the JPG.
This means the RAW developing software has to GUESS the white balance or at least has to apply some pre-setted white balance.

You have to set the white balance manually

True, the difference seems too big.

I've read that some software can convert the RAW files stright from the camera (rawtherapee, picasa?). Maybe you can try it and avoid the DNG conversion and see what happens.

rawtherapee handles CRWs and DNGs identical.
except that you can see data like, ISO, F-Number and focal Length with the DNGs.

At least i've solved the Lightroom problem. I had to select sRGB on the monitor properties:
