EDIT: I actually have it working, though I need to turn on the card via the PLAY button, and load it via firmware update in the MENU. I also have to lock the card before CHDK works.

I'm trying it out without partitioning the card to contain a FAT16 partition. I don't want to use it full time yet, as I'm testing it. My G10's firmware has been updated to 1.0.2.0.

It appears to load when I use the firmware update method by turning on the camera via the PLAY button. I've tried every button to gain <ALT> mode, including the PLAY button, but nothing works. When I try to load <ALT> via the PLAY button, the monitor shuts off. When I used the STICK java app to check the firmware version of CHDK to load, it indicated 102a. I downloaded the stable 1.4.1 version of 102a for the G10, and loaded that onto the SD card.

Is there something I can do to load the CHDK menu, or should I try another version for the G10? I don't want to use the experimental versions, as I just bought the camera a few days ago and want to keep it for a while. Also, is it still required to create the FAT16 partition if I want CHDK to boot from the power button later on? My main reason to use CHDK is to allow me to optically zoom when shooting video; the extra RAW options are a welcome addition though the G10 already makes RAW images out of the box.

The default alt key on G10 is the Shortcut / Print button, left of the viewfinder.

Yes, this is a pre-2011 camera, so autoboot only works from a FAT16 partition. If you don't want to deal with the hassles of a multi-partition card, you could buy a 4GB card and format it FAT16, or just using a single 4 GB partition on a larger card.

FWIW, the 1.5 version is unlikely to be any less safe than 1.4, but it won't solve your issues getting into alt.

That means you have the correct version of CHDK loaded for your camera's firmware. None of the other firmware versions will work.

@reyalp 's suggest to use a 4G card (or just make a larger card into a 4G one) is a good one if you don't want to deal with dual partitions. Although the latest updates of Windows 10 make that less of an issue.

I'll look into getting a 4 GB card or two. A few stores near my home still sell them. I will keep CHDK on the 32 GB card I'm using it on to fully engage optical zoom for videos.

Also, to format 4 GB as FAT16 you will need format it in a computer rather than the camera, and may need to set options to force FAT16 and / or 64 KB cluster size.

Ok.

CHDK doesn't need much space in the SD card, so can I set up two partitions, one for CHDK and one for photo and video files? For the photos/videos partition that can be set as FAT32, right?

Is there any reason for setting the CHDK partition as large as 4 GB? I'd think that's a waste of usable space if the photos sat primarily in a bigger partition. I know a bit of extra space might be needed for some CHDK specific output.

That's the standard way to configure a dual parition card.

Yes. It had to be as most people want the second partition to be larger than 4G - the limit for a FAT16 parition.

The CHDK partition can be as small as 1MB. Smaller actually, but why bother trying to find a workable size less than that?

EDIT: either STICK or CHIMP will properly setup a dual partition card with CHDK for the G10 for you.
