EOS M3 recording beep??

so I am new to all this CHDK stuff. I got some help here to install it on an M3 and it is working pretty good for clean hdmi out.

I see people testing around new functions all the time and I am wondering if these ever came up before.

My plan is to do live streams and to also be able to record to the card periodically throughout the stream.

I notice that when I have canon overlays all off, I have no way of knowing if I am actually recording or not. For some reason canon does not have a recording video noise, as far as I see I only have a focus beep. when I hit record the camera LED just blinks 3 times.

I notice that in ML they have a feature that when the camera is touched or a button is pressed the canon overlays will come on for a sec and then auto disappear which is super useful for these situations. Has anyone tried anything like that on the CHDK?

Another option would be for CHDK to have an option to play a tone/beep when recording starts and stops?

That would be a new feature.
Since catching button presses is non-trivial, how about an option for leaving overlays on for a user-specified amount of seconds, after leaving the CHDK menu *ALT mode? You'd then have to click the ALT button (M-Fn by default) twice to get the overlays back for a few seconds.

Testing beeps has never been on my list and I don't think it has been tested on the M3 either. If beeps do work in CHDK, this feature would not be impossible to do either. But, I'd probably choose the first option out of these two.

Hey, that would work just as well. I am not sure if you already have an M3, but I'd love to test that feature if you can code this.

I have an M10 that also supports clean overlay, so I'll be able to see whether my code works. I'll look into implementing this in a few days.

Awesome, Thanks for looking into it!

Here's a patch and a test build for M3 101a.

Unfortunately, it's not as pretty as I would have liked. It turned out that the method used for cleaning/restoring the overlay does not work well when not coupled with a redraw of the Canon overlay. I therefore had to resort to a brute force method where a full screen Canon "dialog" is displayed/removed in quick succession. The side effect is that there is a momentary blackout right before the overlay appears.
I don't think I'll make this official in its current form. The patch reuses the existing config entry to also store the new config value there.

There is a new CHDK menu entry:
Video Parameters -> Show overlays after leaving ALT
The options are:
- : Overlays won't show up when exiting ALT mode
2s, 5s, 10s: Overlays become temporarily visible for the specified amount of seconds

So, to get the overlays back for a few seconds, one needs to enter and exit ALT mode (that's two clicks on the ALT button).

Nice dude, it works great. Thanks for doing this.

I just replaced all the files that were zipped with the ones on the card.

is that .diff file supposed to go anywhere in particular? I just put it on the main folder of the card for now and its working.

The diff file shows others the changes to the source code made for this. You don't need it on the SD card at all.
Koshy had a little ELPH which wasn't white as snow but everywhere that Koshy went the ELPH was sure to go. (actually an SD, but that detail ruins the rhyme...)
