SD870is (IXUS 860) WIll not power on with a locked SD card... ???

Ok, I'm new here and have an SD870.

I have read many FAQ and posts about CHDK and the SD870 but can't figure this out...
The problem is that when I lock the SD Card so it will auto boot, the camera will no longer turn on...   ???
When I unlock the card it will turn on as normal...

I have a 2GB card formated in FAT16 and set to be bootable. This same card worked as bootable on an SD850 I had for a short time before I decided to return it for this SD870 because I wanted the 28mm wide lens.

I made sure the DISKBOOT.BIN did not have the @ problem that happens with unzipping on a Mac and replaced the SD850 CHDK with the SD870 version of allbest 50.   The allbest-ixus860_sd870-100c-50.zip file I downloaded didn't have the PS>FIR file in it...  could that be the reason?

I don't think the 'missing' PS.FIR is the problem...that just means this is a DryOS cam.
some ideas:
- Did the copy of the 860 DISKBOOT.BIN actually 'take' (if overwriting it failed you'd be trying to boot
  with the 960 firm - which wouldn't work ) -> check sizes & recopy if necessary (write-protect off !)
- Remove CHDK/CHDK.CFG if present
- If the above does not work wipe all files on card and start from scratch

HTH,

Ok I redid everything and still the camera will not turn on when I press the POWER button if the card is locked...
I did however discover that I can press the PLAY button and CHDK will automatically load in PLAY mode.
Now if only I could take pictures in play mode I would be set...   :P

May camera has factory firmware 1.00c and I'm playing with allbest-50

Try pressing the shutter button, and it will switch to recording mode.

On my SD870, it also boots into play instead of record (although for me, the power button works)

Hey that worked...   :)

Ok next problem,

When in in record mode I can't use the CHDK menu because it only says on screen for a moment until something moving in the image behind it clears it away...   Do I just need to be in Play mode with a still image when I want to use the menu? or is there some other problem here?

I just spent some time tracking down a strange problem and I thought I'd mention the problem and the cause here in case others encounter this as well.

I noticed that the CHDK menus would disappear randomly, mostly when I panned the camera across some objects on my desk.  It turns out that I was playing around with the Face Detection feature and left it turned on.  The SD800 was sometimes thinking it saw a face and was drawing the white detection box around it.  This causes a screen redraw, even in Alt mode, thus blanking out the menus even though CHDK still thinks it is in menu mode.

Maybe there are other situations that force screen updates as well?

That was indeed the problem.  I turned face Detect off and the Menu no longer blanks out.   :D

Other than learning what this firmware can do and dealing with the odd way of turning the camera on I think I'm good to go now!

Thanks for everyone's input!

Popeyejunior, do you mean the "touch menu" behaviour as described in reply #5 here ?

Update...   I guess I spoke too soon...

The Face Detect OFF worked for a short time, but now the chdk menu is blanking out again anyway...

I have the touch icons turned off as well, but this blanking menu seams related to motion in the cameras field of view more than other menu or osd items...
