Depth Of Field Info - Chdk version

I've just published my latest script, which is a CHDK version of one I wrote for Magic Lantern cameras: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=24762.msg224057#msg224057

The new script is designed for those that simply want the best focus out of their landscapes and (non-macro) focus bracketing.

See https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/Depth_Of_Field_Info_-_Chdk_version

As usual, I welcome any feedback.

A few minor tweaks to smooth things out with the CHDK backend  ;)

As usual, latest version is here: https://gist.github.com/pigeonhill/600ce3c066c5f8f22b722a2a311b2c21

More minor tweaks to the UI, eg infinity is indicated by oo, and an additional feature.

For those that require it, DOFIC now allows you to display the Circle of Confusion that is being used. This will be camera dependent, ie on crop, and for my G1X CHDK uses 16 microns.

With this feature enabled, DOFIC will look something like this:

[16] 2<H: 58/4/58 [-]

This tells us that the CoC is 16, that from the current focus position you will need to take two focus bracket to get to the hyperfocal, that the current defocus blur at infinity is 58 microns, that the diffraction blur is 4 microns, the combined blur at infinity is some 58 microns, and you have a focus gap relative to the last image captured.
With the CoC showing, all you need do is watch for DOFIC changing from <H to >H and note how far you are from the hyperfocal. Thus, in the example above, if DOFIC is showing an infinity defocus blur of 8, you know you are focused at twice the hyperfocal. If you saw 32, you are at half the hyperfocal
I have updated the CHDK scripts page, that explains how to use DOFIC.
The latest version of DOFIC can be downloaded from the scripts page or from here: https://gist.github.com/pigeonhill/600ce3c066c5f8f22b722a2a311b2c21

Latest release now includes feedback telling you about infinity focusing, ie focusing beyond the hyperfocal (H), but short of infinity.

DOFIC now shows you your camera's specific defocus blur (in microns) at H and and estimate of the two sensor pixel limit. Thank you@reyalp

Thus, all you need to do is decide if when to stop focusing between these limits, using just the defocus blur or the total blur compromised of defocus and diffraction.

I've also added a 'declutter' feature that simplifies the blur infomation if the defocus blur is the same at the total blur.

I've updated the text in 'User Scripts' and the latest release, as usual can be downloaded from here: https://gist.github.com/pigeonhill/600ce3c066c5f8f22b722a2a311b2c21

I've just started a new series on posts on my blog, that will culminate in discussing my CHDK and Magic Lantern focusing scripts, eg DOFIC.
This first post establishes the fundamentals of my approach and I thought some in the CHDK community may find my blur-based approach to focusing of interest/value.
The post may be found here: http://photography.grayheron.net/2020/01/2020-reflections-on-focus-part-1.html

Update of DOFIC at: https://gist.github.com/pigeonhill/600ce3c066c5f8f22b722a2a311b2c21

Tweaked the code to hopefully make it more stable, eg DOFIC only updates if you change something. Also, if DOFIC is terminated, the console returns to its default size.

Added in a couple of self explanatory menu items, eg you can position DOFIC's position vertically on the screen.

As usual, I welcome any feedback on making DOFIC better, or questions about this 'output-based' approach to focus tuning and bracketing.

Cheers

Garry
