Hi,
I want to image the Sun thru a solar filter using my SX530HS. However, even at its fastest CHDK exposure of 0.0004sec the Sun is over exposed. My SX230HS and A810 can both go down to 0.00001sec. Is there any way I can reduce the SX530 shutter time?

The CHDK override menu should let you enter the same short times (down to 1/100000) on each camera. So just to confirm, you can enter this on SX530, but it doesn't work?

It's likely this port needs exp_drv task implemented for very short exposures. If you let us know which firmware you have, someone here can probably come up with a test build.

FWIW, with the current SX530 build, I would expect you can override the aperture significantly beyond the stock range, like F22 or so.

Correct, I can enter 1/100000s but there is no effect on exposure below 0.0004sec.

Firmware ver 1.5.0
rev 5235
fw ver 100c
compiler gcc 4.9.3
I had forgotten I can override Av as well and it gets me down to F16. It would still be nice to get down to 1/100000s because short exposures are great for freezing atmospheric disturbance. Also, I can use it to freeze birds in flight.

You can try this test build.
Short exposures will probably work up to 1/40000 or 1/50000, judging by the sx410, it's the same generation of cameras.

Thanks very much for the very quick reply. I am desperate to try it because it looks like a sunny day here. However, I now can't find the firmware update item in the Canon menu  >:( . Will keep trying.

You have to use the autoboot method to load the CHDK, the PS.FI2 file is not included in the package.

Great stuff :) . It took me a while to work out what the autoboot method was but I eventually got it to work. I can now shoot down to 0.00001s like my SX230 and A810. Thanks very much for this and I will post some solar shots when I get them.

Can you please confirm that Tv override works well if you set Tv in the chdk menu to a value less than 1/4000 sec. (shortest in firmware).
On the sx410 it doesn't work as it should, the chdk override is not always applied, the exposure randomly jumps back to 1 / 4000sec which is the shortest Tv in the firmware.
I'm not sure if this would work properly on other DIGIC 4+ cameras with DryOS r55 or later.

It looks like it is pretty stable to me. I finally got some sun today so tried out a range of Tvs from 1/5k to 1/100k and it seemed to work as expected. I shot about 20 pics for each Tv and they all looked Ok. Finally, I determined that 1/8k @ ISO 200 was just right for my solar film so shot 362 images at that setting using a burst shoot script. They all turned out Ok with no duffers. I don't know what you did but it seems to work perfectly.
btw, The minimum Tv in manual mode on my SX530HS is 1/2000 - is that the firmware figure you mentioned?
