Hi all,


Is CHDK usable on the G7X mark II at this stage? I looked at the porting thread https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=13773.30 and also the wiki page https://chdk.fandom.com/wiki/G7XMK2 which says that it is in Alpha state but not much more info than that. If it is usable I will likely buy some used ones for my stereo rig otherwise I will stick with the G7X mark I cameras.

IMHO the G7X II version is usable; but it has not had a lot testing other than mine (that I know of).

I did the mark II port and reyalp did the mark I port - so if you run into issues there should be someone around to help in either case.

The G7X II is the only Digic7 camera currently running CHDK, the dual core CPU has caused some timing issues in some of the code.
I have not tried to synch multiple G7X II cameras - the code for this is complex and messy and this is an area that could work differently with the dual core CPU.

The G7X II has a 14 bit sensor, where the original has a 12 bit sensor. If you are shooting JPG with controlled lighting you probably won't notice the difference.

Really? The G7X I has only 12Bit?
I never notice that, when  I had the G7X I.

I'm still thinking about a 1 inch camera to replace my S110. But especially with an underwater case, the G7X II is too big for me. The G9X II would have been the right size. There's no firmware dump for the G9X II yet.
The G9X II also has a Digic7. Are there really big differences between a port of the G9X II and the G7X II to be expected?

Impossible to say without the camera or at least a firmware dump.
The lack of buttons might mean that the touch screen would be needed to handle the CHDK UI.
I haven't looked at how the touch screen works on the G7X II so no idea how hard it would be to implement for these cameras.

Thanks. I bought one from Gumtree today and loaded CHDK on it (firmware 101b which I loaded with 101a since they are apparently identical), will test the sync with USB input using my analog scope to see if it syncs well.


The other main advantages for me with the G7X2 is that it does burst shooting with RAW which is going to be good for taking HDR stacks (the G7X mk1 only does burst with JPG) and that the image stabilization is better as well since it also uses data from the image sensor in addition to the IMU, so will be able to take longer exposures while handheld.

There is an official firmware update to 1.10b on the Canon web site.

I updated my firmware to 1.1.0
and loaded CHDK onto the sd card and into the G7X2...then firmware update....it flashes the CHDK logo and I see the battery % on the lcd...just cannot get into the CHDK menu screens.

The default button for activating CHDK ALT mode on the G7X2 is the WiFi button on the side of the camera.

I have a helmet cam setup.

I want to use the intervalometer script...
I was hoping to use the wifi camera connect functions to aim better with the cellphone app...


I can't do both? right?

I can't do both? right?


You can change the ALT button in the CHDK settings (I use the movie record button).


Whichever button is selected, a long press will activate the Canon function on the button.
